About

I stand out among the community of teachers because of the "family environment" I create in my studio as well as the type of year round instruction I offer. I am careful about the type of family I accept into my studio. My course of instruction is based on year round program. I offer a standard or flex schedule for summer months. I have been teaching piano for over 30 years in North Raleigh. I teach in my home. I teach students of all ages, including adults. I have an undergraduate degree in music education from East Carolina University and a masters in church music from Southeastern Baptist theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. I have been chair of the Raleigh area National Piano Guild auditions for 20 years. Many of my students have gone on to major in music while others become church musicians, or simply play for their own pleasure. My goal is to make musicians for a lifetime. I teach students with varied levels of skills, talent, and ability. I believe in students being well rounded musicians, able to play all styles of music.

I love helping students learn. Each student is so different. My fun challenge is finding what works best for them, and workiing with what they can do, based on their time availability, interests, and skill. I have been teaching piano for 30 years in the Raleigh area. I have been chair person for the National guild of piano teachers for the Raleigh area for 20 years. Heather G.

Valerie is so skilled at teaching musicianship, theory, and piano performance to students of all ages- my children took from the ages of 4 and 6 through graduation from high school, and now I take as an adult student. We appreciated Valeries flexibility and understanding of scheduling make ups when special events or illness occurred with the children, and her flexible choice plan for summer lesson scheduling. Valerie instilled confidence in our children through her positive teaching methods, and life lessons such as dressing for and conducting themselves for recitals and auditions, writing music resumes for applications as they got older, and using their gift of musicianship to help others and provide enjoyment for family. They loved that Valerie cared about all of their interests and school work- that she wanted to help both of them become well rounded people, as well as great pianists. She became an important member of our family while the kids took lessons from her, and Im so grateful that she teaches adult students so this empty nester can continue the joy of piano playing for years to come.

Valerie is a an excellent teacher who pays attention to details in teaching us to develop skills in playing the piano. She encourages us to stretch ourselves and teaches at our skill level yet has high expectations of us to work toward advancing our skills. I have enjoyed my 4 years of learning from Valerie, and I plan to keep learning and developing my piano skills. I am very happy that I found her and have her as my piano teacher. I highly recommend Valerie to both adults and children.

Frequently asked questions

The most important thing with a new student is to determine what books they need.  This is so important because ALL students are different.  Age, level, learning disabilities or exceptional giftedness all affects the course of study for each student.  In our lessons, we focus on certain songs in our books, which introduces specific concepts and techniques.  Then the student goes home and practices those songs.  The expectation is that those songs will be mastered when the student comes to the next lesson.  And the process continues.
