About

I began my guitar teaching career as a high schooler teaching a 7th and 8th grade class at another school. To do this, I got to leave school early, drive across town to the other school and get credit towards graduation! I was hooked on this music thing!

I have been writing, performing and teaching ever since. I am accustomed to playing an average of around 150 dates per year but 2020 changed all that rather abruptly in mid- March. You can look my duo, Dos Eddies, up at Doseddies.com or see videos of performances at YouTube channel Dos Eddies. My partner is the highly esteemed Greg Miller. He has hair. I don't.

Beginning in 1994, I have been teaching at and through the Music Loft in Wilmington, NC. Right now, I am teaching exclusively online via Zoom which means I can work with learners everywhere. I was skeptical of the online format but have found that it works quite well. I am taking voice lessons using Zoom also, so I have the experience of being on both ends of the process. If I seem appropriate for your learning goals, give it a try, there is no long term contract or commitment.

My first priority as a guitar coach is to share and instill the pure joy of playing music! I continue to play almost every day aside from my "work" as a musician. I just love to play. As a teacher I prioritize tailoring the focus of the sessions to the wishes of the student, using songs/styles of the student's choosing to teach guitar fundamentals and techniques. I specialize in music theory as it applies to guitar playing because understanding the "why" of music goes hand in and with the "how". Practical theory is not the daunting task it may seem to be and does not require music reading! I teach you your favorite songs and show you how figure out your favorites yourself without buying books or online video or tabulature.

In case you are interested in songwriting,I spend much of my time between teaching and playing shows writing and recording songs and have worked with many students who write and aspire to write songs. There is no right or wrong way to create, but it can be helpful to have someone to share your ideas and questions with. Writing music is a great way to reach a state of complete focus (sometimes called flow) which is so difficult to achieve in the distracting world we live in. This is one of the best feelings there is and is great therapy even if the song turns out a dud, as many will.

Lastly, as a partner in your musical journey, I am an empathetic, friendly, easygoing guy who genuinely loves what I do and I get a lot of satisfaction in seeing you progress and have fun!
