Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Every student is different, so a unique approach is necessary for each. We begin by assessing their current ability and discuss their goals and how they align with what I believe I have to share with them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy with an Emphasis in Injury Preventive Keyboard Technique from Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC where I studied with Barbara Lister-Sink who is a leading expert in the field.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are $40/per half hour. If students wish to study with me but my fee presents a financial hardship for them I am willing to put them on a sliding scale.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of varying age levels and abilities. I have more experience with adult students but am happy to work with children.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Music making is a deeply personal and vulnerable enterprise, so I think it is important to feel comfortble expressing yourself to your teacher. Look for someone who communicates clearly to you and who believes in you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Often students have unrealistic expectations for themselves which can lead to feelings of discouragement and impatience. Further, nothing is aquired throuh music without practice, so if you are impatient or unwilling to practice then there is nothing your teacher can do.
