Ruth Brons is one extraordinary teacher. She has deeply impacted the lives and well-being of both my daughters. My daughters have two very, very different personalities. For the past ten-plus years I have watched Ruth work with each girl with great success. She knows just what to do to bring out the best in her students — no matter their mood of the moment — sad, hyped, happy, frustrated, tired — even teen attitude. Ruth knows how to roll that into the lesson for maximum effect. Their lesson time with Ruth is a very engaged island of pleasurable learning. For Ruth it’s all about the joy of music, the community it brings with it and acquiring a life long skill that will continue to give the student that joy and community. Ruth brought each of my daughters to a very confident level of mastery of their instrument — and that means that today, they can sit down with a group of very competent musicians and gamely take on a challenging new piece. Neither one of my daughters wishes to major in music in college, though I know many of Ruth’s students have. Now, with one daughter off to college and another soon to follow, both — thanks to Ruth — make music a huge part of their lives — it’s where they find their friends and share good healthy time communing with them.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We juggle hard work, good music, technique and FUN.

All students have a daily practice plan, and receive regular weekly private lessons during the school year, or lessons by appointment in the summer.

Saturday group lessons are offered through Montclair State University Center for the Preparatory Arts.

Students are motivated to progress by preparing for Group Concerts, Solo Recitals, and preparation for the annual American String Teacher's Association Certificate Advancement Program Exam.

Temple University, Master's of Music in Viola Performance; 1983.

How did you get started teaching?

I attended grad school on a Teaching Fellowship, teaching in community music outreach program, and have had a busy studio ever since. My mother teaches cello, and now my daughter also teaches violin/viola. It is was we do, and we love it!

What types of students have you worked with?

Ages 3 through Adult; ALL Levels.
