About

Hi, and welcome to my guitar/music studio! My name is Tim Johnson, and I'm a Norwegian guitarist living in NYC, and would love to help you reach your musical goals! The lessons: I tailor the lesson plan according your personal musical taste and goals. Each student is different, and to me it's very important to get to know you and what you're passionate about, so that you'll have fun and enjoy the learning process, and keep the spark going! Whether you're into pop, jazz, rock, r&b, or beyond, we'll build the skills you need to play the music you love! I'm happy to teach any level, as long as you're willing to invest a little practice time between the lessons, so that you keep progressing. I can also help with audition prep for music college etc.

My experience: - B.M Berklee College of Music '19 (on scholarship) - M.M Manhattan School of Music '22 (on scholarship), studying under Mike Moreno. - Performances in Japan, Norway, Italy, Argentina, as well as in notable east-coast jazz clubs like Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center, Smalls, Scullers, Regattabar, The Side Door, South Jazz Kitchen, & the 55 Bar. - Performances alongside jazz greats Damien Sneed, Melissa Aldana, and Neal Smith, and in Broadway musicals like Pippin and Once on this Island. - Awards: Berklee Jimi Hendrix Award, Baerum Culture Award, Juvenarte composition award winner, Lee Ritenour's Dreamcatcher competition runner up, NAMM Innovation Award, Tom Wilhelmsen Scholarship, Johnny Ellings Scholarship, NORAM Scholarship Fellow. - Worked as an accompanist and session player in Berklee's Voice, Piano, CWP & Film Scoring departments. - Teaching: Years of private lesson teaching experience at various schools, privately, online & in person. Taught guest workshops at various arts high schools on the east-coast, as well as some college level in Argentina.

I enjoy getting to know my students, and figuring out out what they're passionate about or interested in, when it comes to music, and helping them improve and achieve their goals so they can enjoy music even more than they already are. I recently taught a wonderful 10 year old guitar student online from Norway. He was excited about all kinds of music, so we worked on pop, jazz, rock and beyond, and he practiced every week without fail, and got so much better over the year I worked with him, which was very fun to witness.

    Frequently asked questions

With a new student I will have them show me an example of their playing. Then we will focus on the things that they need to work on, and also the styles of music that most interest them. I will then pick new material that will help each student grow, while learning the music they love.

People started to ask me about specific techniques that I was using, or expressed a desire to get better at guitar/music. I enjoy sharing what I've learned, and discussing how to reach your musical goals more efficiently, and most importantly sharing the love of music.

Guitar students aged 7 - 65, and at many different levels. Music theory students, trying to get into music high school or music college. People interested in jazz, and wanting to learn how to improvise.

Look for someone with a strong educational and performance background, and most importantly someone who's positive and encouraging as a teacher.

Bring some ideas of what kind of music you'd like to learn, or anything songs you enjoy listening to, or why you want to learn guitar or music theory.
