West New York Guitar Instruction

Ron Rothschild · West New York, NJ

Featured Instructor

We recently interviewed West New York Guitar Teacher, Ron Rothschild about his guitar teaching, and we’re posting a transcript of the interview on today’s blog post. To see Ron’s full interview and hear what he has to say about his guitar teaching approach visit his guitar teacher page on Lessons.com today.

Lessons: So hello, Ron Rothschild. Thank you so much for joining us here on Lessons.com

Ron Rothschild: Hi. Thanks for having me.

Lessons: We’re really looking forward to hearing all about your guitar teaching. Maybe you can start by telling us where you teach.

Ron Rothschild: I teach guitar in Manhattan. I have a studio on the Upper West Side, but I also travel to students’ homes along the West Side and also the Upper East Side

Lessons: And, do you find that you teach more adults or children or is it a mixture of both?

Ron Rothschild: It’s probably about a fifty-fifty mix. It varies. Sometimes I may be teaching more adults. Sometimes I may be teaching more children.

Lessons: And how would you describe the level of interest in learning guitar in Manhattan? Do you find that a lot of people want to learn to play guitar?

Ron Rothschild: I think a lot of people do want to learn guitar. In fact probably more people are contacting me or other guitar teachers. I think playing guitar is something a lot of people want to do, and I’ve found with a lot of guitar students, they’ve wanted to do for a long time, and it takes a while for them to sort of make that call … take those steps. Yeah, I think people will always want to play guitar.

Lessons: And what styles of music do you find that people are most interested in? What do you find that people request most often to learn?

Ron Rothschild: It’s a varied mix. It seems like classic rock is very popular, also more … today’s music, the kids are more into that. I find people who are into folk and blues … reggae – all styles which I teach, along with jazz. My main focus is rock and pop and blues, which does seem to be what most people are into learning … wanting to learn how to play.

Lessons: And can you give us a sense in general terms, in straightforward terms, what is your approach to teaching guitar? What do you tend to focus on?

Ron Rothschild: Well, I really like to try to find out what each individual student wants to learn, whether that’s singing and playing at the same time, or they want to learn about playing lead guitar and solos – so they’re more interested in scales. I try to find out what artists or genres they like and find simple songs by those artists, or similar artists, to introduce concepts like playing lead or strumming along with a beat, or even figuring out songs by ear.

Lessons: Can you tell us what your fees are and what’s your scheduling format? How often do you work with people?

Ron Rothschild: Right now I’m charging $50 per hour, whether I go to someone’s house or they come to my studio. I work with all my guitar students a minimum of an hour a week. I feel that’s the minimum students need to play to start showing progress. I do work with students more often than that, or for longer durations, and progress tends to happen faster.

Lessons: Can you tell us a little about your equipment? I see a couple of guitars behind you there.

Ron Rothschild: Yes, there’s a Yamaha acoustic – I guess the guitar that I play most often, just hanging out or I want to play on my own. I also got a Telecaster, a Stratocaster, and a Precision Bass that I also use with my students – either myself accompanying them or some students are interested in, and I teach them the basics of bass guitar.

Lessons: And do you offer guidance to students about purchasing their own equipment?

Ron Rothschild: Yes, I do. I find that a lot of beginning guitar students are nervous that they don’t have a guitar for their first guitar lesson, and that’s really not a problem, because I can help them by recommending a guitar that’s going to be right for them, at a price that’s also going to be right for them.

Lessons: Well, Ron, thank you so much for joining us here. It’s been great to hear about your guitar teaching.

Ron Rothschild: Thank you so much.
