Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I always like to get to know the student through some simple conversation and also find out what experience he/she has with music. Once I figure these things out I can start tayloring the lesson to the individual.
Fundamentals are very important.
I try to keep a good balance between Fun and Fundamentals. And this often results in Fundamentals being Fun!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors degree in Jazz Performance from William Paterson University and I have experience performing, touring, and/or recording with some of the Jazz greats of our time.
I have also taught drums on and off for 16 years privately and in music studios.
I have not taught or played piano nearly as extensively as I have drums but I do offer beginner piano lessons.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$50.00 per hour lessons ($15.00 if I travel to student)
So $65.00 for a one hour in home lesson.
$50.00 for a one hour lesson at my place.
$40.00 for 45 minute lessons (same fee for travel)
How did you get started teaching?
In high school I was known amongst classmates as one of the drummers who could play at school, (i was in jazz band) and some of fellow classmates and parents who had heard me play asked if I gave lessons. So I jumped right in and said "yeah I'll teach you what I know". Not all of them stuck with it but I'm sure learning some drums/music has helped them be able to learn other things. Music teaches us how to learn!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have tought beginners-professionals ages 4-68.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was fond of a butterfly sitting on my shoulder for 40 minutes while I played the drums outside...
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise he/she to only pursue lessons in music if you really love music and want to learn!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I am no one to say what someone else should think.
And I'm open to most questions and helping anyone however I can.
