About

I bring my range of experience and love of music to every lesson and hope to enrich the students lives by showing them the joy of music. I think playing is a lot of work but should always be fulfilling and enjoyable. I bring that mindset to every lesson.

Violinist Katherine Gilger currently lives in Raleigh, NC yet prior to the Covid pandemic she resided in New York City and has been teaching violin, viola, and piano in the city for the last five years. She recently graduated from the Mannes School of Music where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. While at Mannes, Katherine studied with David Chan, concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and renowned pedagogue Aaron Rosand. Katherine also served as concertmaster of the Mannes Orchestra. Katherine performs with the North Carolina Symphony and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and she is the Assistant Concertmaster of the Venice Symphony. Furthermore, Katherine is an active chamber musician having performed with members of the American Ballet Theatre, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A frequent recitalist, Katherine has played recent concerts in Vermont, North Carolina, upstate New York for the Young Musicians Forum, and around New York City. Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, Katherine began playing the violin at seven years of age and the piano at four. She studied with North Carolina Symphony Assistant Concertmaster Rebekah Binford and was concertmaster of three youth orchestras. Katherine hopes to bring her experience playing all different kind of music and her love of playing to all her students. She hopes to enrich their lives and expand their horizons with the joy of learning music.

Katherine is a very effective and patient teacher. She focuses on establishing solid fundamentals before moving on to more complicated pieces of music. She consistently reminds students to practice not only the music, but also ear training skills, and movement exercises to improve the overall quality of the students playing. Katherine is an excellent communicator and has a solid knowledge of the skills required to be a successful violinist.
