Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start with an interview with all new students, usually over the phone. This allows me to get an idea of the student's experience level, goals, and expectations. This also gives the student to get an idea about me and if he or she feels that I'm an instructor that fits their specific needs and wants.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have trained in combat sports and martial arts for more than 30 years; wrestling, Aikido, Shorei-ryu karate, Tae-Kwon-do, Tang-so-do, Mixed Martial Arts, and Jeet-Kune-Do. I have instructor certifications in Jeet-Kune-Do and I'm a certified Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics Instructor. I have been involved in teaching or coaching combat sports, martial arts, and defensive tactics for almost 20 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge per session price which is usually a 1 1/2 hour session, unless client requests a 1 hour session. This is 30 min longer than the average private session. I offer discounts on sessions purchased in groups of 5, 10, 15, and 20.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students with a wide range of needs and goals. Some common reasons for students seaking my services are; fitness, martial arts instruction (physical and spiritual), competition coaching, reality self-defense for many demographics such as women, children, men, and related careers. Training in self defense tools; firearms, knives, impact weapons, pepper spray, and improvised weapons. Law enforcement and security personnel on defensive and control tactics and use of force related to this field.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I greatly enjoy and love teaching all my students despite the reason. I get the greatest satisfaction from changing peoples lives for the better whether it's living a healthier life or a more secure life. My reality based training courses are some of my most successful events, my women's programs always receive great reviews. I most recently started a counter violence workshop specificily for the elderly, for people who have very limited physical abilities but have strong capable minds.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If you don't have any prior martial arts training experience, don't let the common known arts or styles guide your thinking into those are the only effective means of defense. The instructor and the relationship between the instructor and student is the most important. Out of all my years I have never seen an ineffective martial arts technique, I have only seen ineffective instructors. For experienced martial artists or athletes always keep in mind context has to drive content. Make sure the instructor fully understands your context and if the instructor isn't able to fulfill the content, maybe another instructor can.
