About

My teaching approach:

My students become real musicians -- not just guitar players. My approach is skill-oriented and my students are trained to be able to read music, sound out songs, write their own songs, and so on. I do use method books to aid in the development of music reading skills. The goal, however, is to eliminate the method book -- not to be stuck in that system. For a complete idea of what to expect, please visit my website at: www.gpLessons.com

My influences are:

Al Di Meola, Chopin, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Liszt, Bach, Joe Pass, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Beatles, Nine Inch Nails, Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, Mozart, Beethoven, Bartok, Stravinsky, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse, Yes, Rolling Stones, Pat Methany, Stanley Clarke, Miles Davis.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio or the student's home

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

In a first lesson, the first step is to determine where they are in their development. If they are experienced, the first goal is to take what they already know and make it more powerful. For an absolute beginner, I typically like to start with reading skills because it gives the student something productive to do while their hands are acclimating to the instrument.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I usually warm my guitar students up with reading then move on to review some previous material. As they are warming up, I am assessing their progress and making a decision where to take them next. I focus on a student's strengths. Many times, weak areas will simply disappear with this strategy and the students' lessons are extremely productive.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

Any level of student is fine. I accept absolute beginners and very advanced, professional players. Consistent attendance and practice is crucial to producing results. My guideline for practice is more about how often we practice as opposed to how long.
