Ashkenasi Music

About

I am a composer and performer with over 30 years professional experience.

I give private lessons for beginner and intermediate piano players.

I use a tried and true classically structured lesson plan, as well as divise lessons catering specifically to a student's individual musical needs and tastes.

I also teach improvisation, music composition, songwriting, and basics of musical theory.

I teach in my Park Slope home. I also travel to teach students in their homes in the Brooklyn/Park Slope vicinity.

I also lead choirs and mentor classes to create and perform their own original operas in public schools.

I also speak German fluently.

You can read more about my work as teacher, composer, performer and my life in the arts on my website: Notes from a Composer: www.dannyashkenasi.com

Danny was funny and patient and really knew how to communicate technique and theory so I could improve quickly. Im really enjoying my lessons. Something that didnt happen when I was a kid.

Danny was able to work with me at my level of playing, so that I felt supported and encouraged at all times. His choice of music was always interesting and challenging and left me wanting to practice harder.

Danny is able to find a great balance between discipline and enjoyment in his teachings. He makes the lessons fun and at the same time emphasis proper technique. He takes the time to explain the theory behind the music and the reason it should be played a certain way without making the lesson seam like work. Although Im a beginner and have a long way to go, I feel Ive learned a lot with Danny and would highly recommend him.

Danny was patient, experienced, and flexible. He was willing to work with my informal background and identify my areas of weakness. We worked together on music I was interested in while mixing in more technical exercises which were needed in order to improve and eras bad habits. Highly recommended!

All great things to say about Danny!
I’ve been taking lessons with him for almost a year and a half, and I’ve come a long way since I started!
As a teacher, he is patient, kind, and knowledgeable. He is also flexible and will meet you where you’re at in terms of schedule and commitment.
As a music professional, he certainly knows his stuff. From technique and mechanics to music theory and history, Danny approaches his instruction from many interesting perspectives!

    Frequently asked questions

We will together assess their current playing level and musical goals.

If a beginner, we will start lessons that in a practical step by step approach introducing and building up finger placement, note reading and musicianship.  The ability to play and read musical scores is holistically taught at the same time.

We start with a ground level classical foundation, and include musical pieces and styles of particular interest to the student as soon as possible in our lessons together.

Improvisation, composition, songwriting, devising arrangements, and mentoring a variety of musical projects can be included too, depending on the individual student's needs.
