My name is Thad and I have been teaching traditional Chinese martial arts here in the city since 2005. I utilize both martial and medical skills in the Chinese tradition with clients in the New York area to achieve a number of goals - martial development, combat effectiveness, physical rehabilitation, postural realignment, longevity and mindfulness.
I began training Shaolin Kung Fu in 1994, and currently hold the rank of 5th degree Black Belt in that system. I ran a school here in the city called the New York Shaolin Center teaching that style from 2005 to 2011. In 2011 I shifted gears and began training in a more internal Chinese style called Ba Gua Zhang under Tom Bisio, a teacher here in NYC. Tom is a Chinese medical practitioner as well as an accomplished martial artist. Through working with him I also developed a keen interest for the medicine, apprenticing in his clinic for several years and studying his methods of Chinese medical massage.
I got my first taste of teaching martial arts assisting a beginning Kung Fu class in 1994, and connected with it immediately. Since then I have developed a passion for helping people incorprate a Chinese martial arts practice into their lives at whatever level is appropriate for them.
It is incredibly rewarding to witness my students change the way they instinctively move, evolve their understanding of their physical experience in the world and become more focused and present people. I love seeing the confidence and sense of empowerment they exude as they realize these benefits are a direct result of their own practice. I would love to guide you through this process so you can experience the transformative power of this method for yourself!
Thad is one of the most patient, articulate and accomplished teachers I have come across. His lessons are filled with energy and humor and he embodies a deep understanding of the internal and external arts. Working with Thad outdoors in NYC is one of the things I miss most now that I live far upstate!
I have been training privately with Thad over the last year and a half and cannot put into words what an impact it has had on my life. I initially began training with him for Self Defense purposes, but over the last 18 months he has helped me build a personal daily practice that not only helps me feel safer and more aware in the streets of New York, but also more connected with my mind and body. He has a unique talent for finding just the right corrections for me to work on each lesson, and has a positivity that is absolutely infectious. I highly recommend training with him for anyone looking to develop a practical set of martial arts skills that can also be applied in everyday life!
Thad’s knowledge of the art and movement in general is exceptional. He has over 25 yrs. experience in martial arts, dance, Tai Chi, and Bagua.
