In this course, you are the star! Having performed live for 15 years (and counting), I specialize in providing students with the right tools for them to be able to start playing in an intuitive way. Focusing mainly on practical goals, you can learn quickly and in a motivated way. No one is saying starting something new is easy, but it does get easy if you practice! If what you are looking for is a standard, classically-oriented education, look somewhere else! I'm here to teach you how to start playing songs from week one. If singing is something that interests you, I can also work with you to help you achieve playing and singing at the same t ... View Profile

I offer a unique approach to guitar and lessons in general.  I don't believe in a linear process in my method of teaching, however I do believe that learning fundamentals such as sight reading, music theory and understanding/learning about chord structures and harmony are very helpful tools to better express yourself as an artist. I will focus on your goals and helping you reach them. Whether you are looking to write your own music, arrange for different instruments, play songs you love on guitar, learn solos, develop your own sound/voice. I'm dedicated to helping you express yourself and your story better.    I have been play ... View Profile

I have been teaching for over 10 years. I teach privately full-time and run my own company. I personally hire other enthusiastic and experienced music teachers to work with me. I believe learning music should be fun. While it also takes hard work and dedication, a student must first enjoy music in order to continue and progress. My teachers and I incorporate well-known songs into lessons so that students can relate to what they are learning. We also use many of our own games and worksheets to keep students engaged at all times. We offer many different types of lessons including voice, piano, guitar, and songwriting.  ... View Profile

My service stands out because I have successfully taught people who previously failed with other teachers. For example, my plumber came to fix a leak while I was finishing up a lesson. I asked him if he ever thought of playing guitar. He said he actually took guitar lessons from two teachers but he failed. He quit and he decided guitar wasn't a thing he could do. So I said take some lessons with me. I'll give you a free lesson right now. He took the lesson and he came back for many more and he got really good. He could play many complicated songs and solos too. So the teacher really does make a big difference. ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Long Beach Guitar Instruction

Jaf Mahmud · Long Beach, NY

Featured Instructor: Jaf Mahmud

Listening intently might very well be the most significant attribute in a guitarist’s make-up, and the same goes for someone who is teaching guitar. Listening to his or her guitar students to find out what makes them tick and what they have in mind for themselves is of the highest importance, and it’s clear to us that Jaf Mahmud, who gives guitar and bass lessons in Nassau County, Long Beach, New York, possesses that quality to the utmost degree.

In an interview with FindAGuitarTeacher’s James Berry, Jaf talks about his guitar teaching approach and how he guides his students to fulfilling their vision of themselves as a guitar player and complete musician. Taking a look at the interview (Please Click Here) will reveal that Jaf is intent on focusing on his students’ goals in a professional and friendly way, inviting them to reveal what they’d like to do, and then creating personal guitar lessons that lead them through the process of developing their guitar playing.

Jaf teaches guitar in students’ homes throughout Nassau County to a full spectrum of playing levels, including beginner, intermediate, advanced, and pro, and, if you’re an aspiring guitarist (or the parent of an aspiring guitarist) near Amityville, Long Beach, we know that you’ll find Jaf Mahmud’s friendly and highly-competent manner an extremely appealing reason to talk with him about guitar lessons for you or your child. To find out more about Jaf Mahmud and his guitar and bass lessons visit his guitar teaching profile and watch his informative interview.
