I am so appreciative that Alex made me comfortable to start up lessons as an adult student. Taking a 20-year hiatus from piano made the lessons feel so intimidating. But Alex really met me where I was, balancing my comfort level while pushing me a little further. This style of teaching and learning has been a vast improvement to actually understanding the language of the sheet music rather than slowly reading it, note by note. I never thought I’d be in my 30s participating in recitals with some very talented children, but here we are! I am a year in to my lessons with Alex and plan to remain a student as long as he’ll have me!

My 7-year-old son has been studying with Alex for over two years. During last winters recital, I was so inspired not only by my sons performance, but also by the other students present (several of whom were adult learners), that I decided to seek lessons for myself. Based upon the experience with my son, I didnt think I could love AMI more than I did, but now I know I was wrong. I love learning myself. Its incredible that AMI is able to teach each of us where we are, according to our different levels of understanding and skill sets. Its like we have lessons personally tailored to each of us. And we both are convinced were the most amazing pianists ever (LOL). AMI not only has the ability to instruct varied skills sets, but also different ages and personalities. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. The other thing I absolutely adore is the fact that my son played an original piece, with accompanying musicians (a violin and cello instructor) during his 2nd recital! And trust me, its not because my son is that amazing. Its because AMI is that forward thinking and supportive of the learning process. As an educator myself, I truly cant say enough about this incredible Institute and Im so, so grateful I got in on the ground floor before there wasnt room for me on their roster. Every instructor I have met, every aspect of this entire organization is nothing but top notch- and personable, friendly, skilled and awesome (and no, I was not paid to write any of these things!).

Watching Alex teach my son how to play piano is the highlight of my week. Alex, with his refreshing vitality, gives 100% of himself to every lesson in order to inspire and challenge my son to be the best pianist he can be. And my son relishes every minute. Alex emphasizes technique, music theory, and foundational skills, interweaving a diverse selection of pieces tailored to my childs abilities. He intuitively fosters autonomy and a thirst for advancement at an age-appropriate pace. Alexs passion for piano, combined with his innate teaching ability, makes him a profoundly important and positive influence in my son’s musical journey.

Like many people, I have always had dreams of honing my musical skills. However, my anxiety and the lack of structure in my childhood became such a deterrent that I almost gave up entirely. At 29 I decided once again to try and turn my musical ear into something functional. Over the last year, just in time for a new decade of life, I started with the C major scale, a lot of encouragement and positive reinforcement, and the patience and wisdom of Alexandre to guide me on my way. Alexandre is not only a master in his craft but has the methodical adaptability to incorporate history and theory into lessons for all ages. There is no pressure to perform (although there will be opportunities) and no disappointment when you don’t hit your mark. Lessons with Alexandre and the impressive staff he is pulling together for the Akron Music Institute will build your confidence, technique, and help fuel the musical passion you have been waiting to hone. Learning is a constant variable in life and it is truly never too late to begin anew.

I’ve been working with Brendon on cello for the past 6 months. As an adult learner completely new to an instrument I wasn’t sure what to expect. Brendon has been great since day one. He’s very welcoming and encouraging, extremely knowledgeable and always very generous with his time. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for cello instruction or AMI in general for any of the services they provide!

The instructors are professional, many renowned in their own right, but they are warm and caring - not at all intimidating. My piano teacher, Alexandre Marr, met me where I was as an adult student whod taken lessons as a kid, and hes giving me education, theory, and inspiration at a pace that flexes to meet my needs. I especially love that I can take lessons remotely, which means music can conveniently fit into my busy schedule. Thank you Akron Music Institute and Alexandre!
