About

I am a graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory, holding a BA in psychology and a BM in piano performance. I have nearly two decades of concentrated experience with the piano and have taught a variety of ages (the youngest being 5) and skill levels. My concert appearances include performances with the St. Petersburg State Symphony in Russia, Louisville Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Ars Viva Orchestra. I am currently an active competitor, representing the United States at the Stecher and Horowitz International Piano Competition in 2016 and collecting accolades at national collegiate competitions such as the Hellam and Coeur d'Alene Symphony Young Artist Competitions in the past year. I am also a 2013 National YoungArts Federation alumnus. As a performer, music is still hugely relevant and pervasive in my own life and I hope to be able to convey that enthusiasm to students, whether they decide to pursue classical, pop, musical theater, or jazz repertoire. Please feel free to contact me with further questions and concerns. I am currently teaching at the Willis Music Co. in Kenwood Galleria.

Frequently asked questions

Each student comes with a different background in music. If you are already familiar with the keyboard and musical notation, I will usually start you with some technique exercises and assign repertoire based on gauged skill level. If you are a beginner, we will spend our first month of lessons familiarizing ourselves with the keyboard and basic music theory so you have the tools to play. Either way, I try to be receptive to the music you want to play and am always happy when students come in with requests for a specific piece, song, or genre.

It is important to practice outside of lessons! Playing the piano is a lot of muscle coordination and not just theoretical knowledge. Therefore, I would advise students to look into purchasing at least an upright or baby-grand piano if they are looking to really improve their playing. For beginners who are unsure of whether or not they really want to pursue the piano, I would recommend an electronic keyboard.
