About

As a teacher with over 30 years of experience, my goal is to help each student develop their musical potential to the fullest. It begins by laying a good foundation with music fundamentals using effective methods and tools, developing good learning skills and perseverance that carry through life. Subsequently, building on that with good technique and artistry where piano becomes a medium for self-expression. Whether a beginner or advancing student, I start from where they are and bring them to the next level so they can blossom and flourish and share the joy of music-making with others!

Our daughter has been taking lessons from Sally Sansbury for nearly seven years. She started as a beginner, and she can now play intermediate pieces from RCM Level 6. Sally is a very good teacher who encourages her students to not only play with technical proficiency but also musically. She continually challenges her students to play more advanced pieces of music; however, she is very patient with her students, and she meets them where they are at in their abilities; though she challenges them, she does not push them to advance faster than they are able. Sally is good at observing and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of her students; she will spend more time working with the students to master the elements of technique in which they are weak, and she will spend a little time refining the areas where they are strong. She encourages good site reading, ear training, theory, and memorization skills. Sally also nurtures a sense of appreciation for different musical styles and genres. She encourages her students to not only be good players but also good listeners. Our daughter looks up to Sally not only as a teacher but as a mentor. She values Sally’s thoughts on music and musicianship, and she is increasingly eager to try new music simply because Sally suggested it. Our daughter loves to play the piano and our house is full of music every day, and we attribute much of that blessing to the masterful way in which Sally has guided and shaped our daughter’s skill in playing the piano and her appreciation of music.

We have known Dr. Sansbury for many years. When my older son was 7 years old, his piano teacher moved to another state. She recommended Dr. Sansbury to us. Now my older son is 14 years old. My younger son started his piano lesson with her when he was 5 years old and he is 9 now. She only raised the tuition one time during so many years. She can taught very advanced level piano. On the other hand, she is very patient with little kids too. My kids like her and they are very comfortable to ask questions if they have any. She also recommended different piano performance activities to them and let them choose what they like to get involved in. As a parent, I feel I may freely communicate with her about any issue.

Dr. Sansbury is the best teacher for piano performance and music education, who especially combines scientific methods and systematic curriculum. She has many years of experience and very serious in her teaching; She is nice to and patient with students. My daughter made great progress not only in techniques but also in theory ever since the lessons with her.

To me, Dr. Sansbury is more than just a piano teacher. From first grade through high school graduation, she continuously challenged me to strive for excellence and musicality. Some words that describe her: talented, professional, dedicated, perceptive, personable, encouraging.
While majoring in piano performance in college, I found that she had provided a solid background for my music theory and history classes. She has also helped me in teaching my own piano students, through example and advice. We keep in contact, and I trust and respect her. I can’t imagine a better influence in my life.

    Frequently asked questions

I like to set up a meeting with the prospective student and the parent to see if we would be a good match.  If it is a transfer student, I like to hear some playing to see where the student is at.  Usually, the first lesson would involve diagnostic testing with a transfer student. For a student without any prior musical experience, I would have to determine what kind of method is best suited for the student based on age and cognitive ability.

Undergraduate and graduate degrees in piano performance and pedagogy.
I started teaching as a teenager before graduating from high school in Singapore. My parents felt that music was an honorable profession. After coming to the US for undergraduate studies and finishing with graduate school, music finally came full circle for me. I am now passionate about teaching music and passing my skills to the next generation!
I have worked with all kinds of students, from beginner to advanced, young children to adults, new and transfer students. My strength is helping someone who has already had some lessons but want to progress to the next level in their technique and artistry.
