Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Some students already have musical training before coming to me. I would review their current ability and determine what their goals were.
If a student is brand new, I would start with the basics, note reading, rhythm training, based on their skills.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing organ and piano for many years. I started teaching at Chuck Farone's Music Center when I was 15 years old. I have been playing and teaching ever since. I have played at various churches in the area, for weddings, funerals, and Sunday services. I truly enjoy private one-on-one lessons, working with students to see them grow and improve.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are $14.00 per half hour, once a week. The cost of books is separate, usually $10 per lesson book.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching at age 15. My teacher, Chuck Farone, opened his own music studio/store in 1970. I worked as an organ and piano teacher when his store opened.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with all types of students. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced students all have different musical needs. I enjoy working with all of them.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I host an annual student recital in April. The one in April, 2025, was very enjoyable. The next one is at the end of April of this year.
I was asked to have a few students perform at the New Castle Music Club. Two of my students performed in front of approximately 100 people. One woman, who had taught piano for many years, congratulated me, saying if it wasn't for my teaching, they would not be playing like they were. It was very humbling for me to hear that.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would ask how long lessons are, how often. I would want to know what type of music would be available, once the basics were reviewed. I would want to know what the teacher's expectations were of practicing and how other activities can affect piano progress.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should know how many other things they are involved in. Some parents have their children spread too thin, and it can really cause distress to a student who wants to succeed in piano, but just doesn't have the time to spend on practicing.
