About

Hi there! I'm so glad you decided to look into taking lessons! It isn't enough to view someone's credentials; there is a connection that needs to exist between teacher and pupil. Music is such a subjective field, you need to make sure that you find a teacher whose skill set and training matches the goals of the pupil.

My background is in classical performance but my education is in vocal pedagogy performance and contemporary commercial music. I have a Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance and two Master's degrees in Music Education (and licensed to teach K-12) as well as Vocal Pedagogy Performance from The Boston Conservatory. From there, I did doctoral work in Music Education and Choral Conducting from The University of Florida. Having moved to Rhode Island, I received a level 1 certification in Biodynamic Myofascia Manual Voice Therapy and am looking to continue my education at the McClosky Institute of Voice this summer. For students who want to learn more than just singing, perhaps what it takes to enter education, conducting, composition/arranging or just general musicianship, my education allows for a much greater spectrum of fields of music to teach.

I believeI the pairing of these different facets of music make my instruction more practical to students who want to learn a health vocal foundation and technique but not necessarily the operatic/classical style. I incorporate body awareness, muscular training when needed, audition and performance techniques as well as lyrical diction and acting skills into my teaching because my goal as an instruction is to enstill my students with the tools they need to "diagnose" and "fix" problem areas that they run into as singers, rather than relying solely on my instruction. For my piano students, we follow a technique anthology supplemented with original material to begin solidifying the groundwork for piano/keyboard skills. Sightreading, musicianship, theory and counterpoint and minor composition are all fundamental skills I teach in all of my students. Piano students can begin in kindergarten.

I look forward to meeting you and seeing if we are a good fit for one another! Please take a look at my website for additional information, clips of my own compositions and recitals as well as my professional curriculum vitae (resume) at www.johnathanbosse.weebly.com.

I love seeing my students express themselves utilizing music as their medium, exploring emotion, culture and history while paving the way for their own musical career. Performance is a form of emotional exploration that helps students in music express their needs in different ways. Outside of the academic research proving the benefits of studying music, I've found a greater assett that music establishes; emotional health. While exploring poetry and pairing that with expression and performance, I believe music creates more well-rounded individuals through self-reflection and emotional growth. I've been very blessed to receive national attention for my teaching, and currently hold appoints in the public and private setting at both k-12 and higher education.

Eköh Studio is the single best vocal instruction experience Ive ever had. The instructor was incredibly knowledgeable about the anatomy of the voice, and was able to utilize visual, tactile, and verbal teaching methods seamlessly. The instructor worked with me individually as well as in a group setting, and was able to help all singers find success regardless of ability level. The instructor was talented, funny, kind, and passionate about helping me on my musical journey. You would be doing yourself a disservice by working with any other vocal coach.

Johnny is an expert at the physiology of vocal production. He can explain each and every element clearly, allowing his students to gain knowledge as well as skill. Johnny also takes care of the voices of his students.
He has experience teaching musical theatre pieces as well as more classical repertoire. His expectations of students are always clearly outlined including planning ahead for lessons fastidiously. Additionally, Johnny provides recording of lessons uploaded to a private cloud folder for students to review at their leisure.
Above all, Johnny is the best voice teacher I have had the pleasure of working with including my collegiate voice professors. He is passionate, knowledgeable, and above all else invested in the success of his students. You will be hard pressed to find a voice teacher with this complete package.

Johnny takes the time to learn how his singers learn best and tailors his knowledge in a way that is accessible for each individual. Ive worked with Johnny in a small ensemble (quartet) setting, and he adapted to each of us to achieve results we didnt think were possible.
In addition, Johnny breadth and depth of knowledge across numerous genres of vocal performance makes him an appropriate coach for young singers, skilled amateurs, and highly trained singers alike. His friendly personality is the glue that makes you want to keep working with him, even as you tackle your greatest challenges as a vocalist. He really encourages personal exploration of all facets of singing and I found that to be an immense help, as part of my vocal challenges stemmed from the lack of ability to be vulnerable in performance situations. Johnny was able to get me to a point where I felt I could let go of those insecurities, and it made both the technical and visual aspects of my singing far more powerful.

    Frequently asked questions

I first understand where a student currently is in their technique alongside their understanding of what is happening in their body to create their singing voice. An educated singer is able to correct issues on the spot by themselves without the crutch of having a teacher. I try to develop tools for my students so they no longer REQUIRE me.

My base price is $1/min, so $30/30min and $60/60 etc. but I offer discounts for students who prepay their lessons to ensure commitment, as well a family discounts for multiple students in a family and referral discounts for those that bring new students to the studio.

I always knew I would be a teacher. I have been told I have a keen skill to bring myself to a pupil's level of knowledge and instruct them without belittling their knowledge and to increase their understanding of a topic from there. Philosopher Lev Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development is a great concept that portrays this.

I honestly enjoy teaching the spectrum of skills. I've worked with more professionally trained musicians for dramatic coachings and technique to just beginning to step into the world of music. It is a lot easier to create healthy, effective and efficient vocal habits than to break down bad ones and establish a new system, so I enjoy working with "newbies". I think guiding a singer at an early age to make positive decision and habits will help establish a foundation for a healthy career as a voice user. I typically would start lessons from 5-6th grade and have taught adult singers with the same passion as I bring to every student in my studio.

I also work as a clinician and vocal technician within the Barbershop Harmony Society. My most recent youth quartet, Greenlight, ranked 7th internationally in July of 2018.
