About

I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, and I work with students of all ages, from beginners to advanced players. You can view my credentials at georgelitterst.com.

I specialize in innovative uses of technology to make learning fun and to speed student development. Although a keyboard with MIDI technology is not required at home, my students take advantage of that resource if they have it.

I use quite a bit technology in my studio. I have a Disklavier grand piano that records and plays back. It can also be used with interactive music software for computer or iPad.

I am well known in the piano pedagogy field as a regular presenter at national conferences, such as Music Teachers National Association and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. I also have a software company called TimeWarp Technologies (timewarptech.com) that specializes in interactive music software for iPad, Mac, and PC.

I enjoy taking a musical journey with my students and helping them to fulfill their musical aspirations.

I especially enjoy the opportunity to work with the unique set of learning skills that each student brings to the study of piano. The best teaching approach for one student is not necessarily the best for another.

The fun challenge is finding the best resources and instructional approach that uniquely match each student's needs.

I have been taking piano lessons with George for fours years and and can honestly say he is the best teacher. He has a way of explaining music theory very easy to understand, while also helping to encourage and enhance his students creative abilities. George also has countless songs to suggest at each students playing level which will emphasize specific concepts you can apply in all of your piano playing. George is very knowledgable is music history as well. George has a way of bringing out the best in his students. I would highly recommend George if you are looking for a great piano teacher!

George Litterst shows me how to improve my playing by explaining clearly how the hand position is best by keeping it flexible and loose. Also, instead of reading note after note, he shows me how to see the chords and position the hands to cover the notes. Hes the best teacher Ive ever had.

George is an extremely talented pianist and teacher. Our children were five to seven years old when they started lessons with him. His is very patient, and also knows how to make the lessons enjoyable for them. His schedule was also very accommodating. He is tech-savvy and uses software that he developed called “Home Concert Extreme”. This makes learning fun and is very helpful with note timing. I would highly recommend him for anyone wanting to learn how to play piano!

He is very nice. When I dont understand the music theory, he will do his best to help me understand. He also teaches history about the composers and makes the piece feel very deep.

    Frequently asked questions

Each student has a unique learning style and a unique set of aspirations. I start by assessing the student's current skill level and interests, and then proceed to develop a personal course of study that best matches the student's needs.

In particular, I take advantage of modern technologies that shortcut the learning process and make practice at home more fun.

Although I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in music, I mostly draw on my experiences as a teacher, learner, and performer.

I have been a long time developer of music software that enhances the learning experience and takes advantage of contemporary tools, such as the iPad, personal computer, and MIDI-equipped piano or keyboard.

My studio is nicely equipped for a modern approach to teaching, and I enjoy working with whatever modern resources the student may have at home.

Lessons are available for 30, 45, and 60 minute durations in person or online.
At the recommendation of my college piano professor, I starting teaching during my junior year in college.
I have worked with students as young as 5 and as old as 80+. The abilities of my students have ranged from beginners to advanced players. I have taught in many venues including my own private studio, personal online studio, community conservatory, and two colleges. In addition, I have worked with professional musicians and music educators who want to upgrade their teaching capabilities with modern technologies.
In July of 2023, I received a lifetime achievement award from The Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy. The award was given during the bi-annual National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, one of two national conferences for keyboard teachers.
It is important to recognize the fact that between lessons, you are your own teacher. When selecting a teacher, I would advise that you look for one who focuses on the learning process and helps you to become an independent learner.
It is important to have an open discussion about the student's needs and aspirations as well as the teacher's strengths and interests. It is important to try to achieve a good match.
