John Duffy Piano Lessons
About
Piano performance student at Providence College. I’ve been playing the piano for 15 years, and have taught lessons periodically for the last 5 or so. I love teaching both new and intermediate students to learn the piano and fall in love with it the way I did! I am classically trained, and took lessons at the RI Philharmonic Music School for 8 years. The first lesson is free and non-committal. I can teach both kids and adults!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically ask the student to play a piece they have recently worked on, so I can get an idea of where they are coming from. I then ask them about their interests—what do they want to accomplish? Do they want to learn how to sight read? Do they want to train their ears to know chord theory? I then give them repertoire that fits their interests and allows them to grow.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
15 years experience of playing the piano—I am at a professional level and have been playing in the Providence area for the last 5 years. I was the winner of the 2016 RI Philharmonic Concerto Competition, and was awarded a cash prize for my performance in the 2018 Chaminade Piano Competition. I have also participated in numerous Master Classes.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
First lesson is free and non-committal. After this, we can discuss a pricing system based on the ability and need of the student. The first payment is the ability to see a young musician grow in their love for the piano!
How did you get started teaching?
I began by teaching friends and family.
What types of students have you worked with?
Typically beginner-intermediate level students both young and around my age.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try to find someone who will let you grow into you own style, that helps you find your own artistic expression. Far too many teachers force their own interpretation on their students.
