About
Authentic Okinawan Karate and weapons taught.
We don’t practice flasy kicks or unrealisttic sparring. Old fashioned Karate is close in fighting with low kicks and brutal self defense techniques.
We teach more one-on-one than large classes. matsumura is not really designed for mass consumption.
Classes are from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays with optional classes Saturday at 11:00 AM.
Hours may change to Monday and Wednesday sessions soon.
** And if someone really wants to learn and practice, I can be flexible with my schedule **
I enjoy seeing someone grasp a concept and be able to start using a principle.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Teaching basic movements - punch/kick/blocks - the reinforcing with Kata practice and one steps to reinforce correct movement and timing. As skill progresses, the Kata and movements get more complicated. Learning how to move in coordination with both attack and defense.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Trained in Okinawa , Japan and continue to train and study with my teacher and other Matsumura people.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$60.00 per month. Or $30.00 for each class.
How did you get started teaching?
Started teaching to pass on some of the knowledge i have gained over the years. Our system is not well known in the United States.
What types of students have you worked with?
People that have trained in different styles to beginners looking for self defense.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Our most recent Summer camp, held in Louisville, KY. Got to practice with Matsumura folks from all over the country and Canada.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Function over form. Most Karate these days is not very good. Watch the teacher and especially their students to see if they actually know how to fight and not play tag with silly kicks and back fists. We do not teach sport Karate. Okinawan Karate is subtle and does not use force on force.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Special needs and what they expect to get out of the learning process.
