    Frequently asked questions

I gently ask the student questions to determine what musical symbols and terms they have seen and what they mean.  If the student has taken lessons before I ask them to play a piece so I can determine what skill level they are at.  I then ask them what types of music they are interested in playing and help them choose books that will lead them to their goal.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Music Education.  I am certified by the Music Teachers National Association.

The tuition is paid on a monthly basic.  Tuition at Lane Music in Knoxville is $100 per month.  ($20 goes toward renting facilities.)  Tuition at my home in Maryville is $80 per month.

(These rates are for a half hour lesson per week.)

I started teaching when I was in college.  We had a pre-college teaching program for the community.

I teach students from beginner level to advanced.  I work with students from 5 years old to 80 years+ old.

I had a student who attended the Tenneesee Governor's School for the Arts!  It was a four week adventure at Middle Tennessee State University.  She received coaching from various music professors and performed with fellow students.  Only 12 pianist were chosen to attend from the whole state!

Ask about education, certification and previous experience.

If they will have enough time to practice, considering their current schedule.  Learning to play the piano involves more than just a 30 minute lesson each week.  Students need to work on their skills and music reading several times throughout the week.
