About

I teach individual guitar lessons to anyone who wants to learn how to play or get better at playing the guitar. I have been doing it for the last 40-some years and know firsthand what the challenges for beginner and/or intermediate players are, regardless of their age, level of experience, or style of interest.

I focus very early in my lessons on teaching chords and rhythms as they apply to playing songs, so the student can perform their selection of preferred tunes as soon as possible. Also, working on the motor skills needed to perform efficiently and effortlessly, in addition to basic music theory, reading, and ear training depending on the long and short-term goals of the student. Improvisation and playing solos are other areas that we may explore if that is what the student wants to develop.

I teach from beginners to advanced players, from kids 9 y/o and up to adults of any age. I should say that I enjoy when I see the joy of my students playing something that they perceived as hard to play at first, but after improving with my lessons they take the challenge and overcome it by playing successfully. I enjoy the most when they just have fun playing the music they like.

I am a professional musician, I play both electric and acoustic guitar, and also electric bass. I have been an active musician in the DFW circuit for the last 23 years, and 25 years more before coming to Texas, for a total of almost 50 years of experience as a performer. I play Blues, Rock'n Roll, Jazz, Latin, Classical, Pop, Funk, R&B, Brazilian, and several other styles.

Currently, I am teaching at Collin College (Plano, TX) the classes of Audio Engineering 1, and MIDI, and I am also in charge of the Commercial Music Ensembles and Electric Guitar Private Lessons. I wrote the manual for the MIDI class at the College and collaborated in the creation of the guitar curriculum for two important Music Schools in South America.

I have both the training and experience as a performer and as a teacher at multiple levels, from beginners to advanced, from kids to adults of any age.

Juan is a knowledgeable and talented professional musician that understands music theory as well as playing techniques for both electric and acoustic guitar. As a teacher he quickly keys in on what the student needs to work on and is able to offer/explain/demonstrate different approaches as needed...and always in a patient manner. Juan is a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend him for anyone seeking a competent, well rounded guitar teacher!

I took several guitar classes from Juan Moreno at Collin College in Plano Texas. My goal at the time was to learn strumming and lead guitar. One of the song I love was Everybody needs a friend (1973) by Wishbone Ash. Juan was very patient with me as my learning was very slow. He broke down the lead guitar section in small parts and taught me each part. I was very happy to be able to play the whole song including the lead section. Additionally, I learned several strumming pattern from Juan.

    Frequently asked questions

    Interview and diagnosis.

Interviewing gives me an insight of their interests and goals, style of preference, short and long term goals, also the time they have available to practice. This helps me to make a plan tailored to the student needs.

Diagnosis helps me to know the students current performing abilities and knowledge level so I can determine what needs to be done to take the student to the desire level or next step in the process of achieving their goals.
