Kelley C. says, "My two daughters have been taking piano, guitar and ukulele lessons with Andrew, Jake and Deanna. Our experience with the studio has been very positive. All three of the instructors have been warm, encouraging, and fun. I love that they take a little time during each lesson to play something for the kids. In this way, my kids are able to experience music beyond their current abilities and also see what they will be able to do someday if they continue to learn and practice. The Wilson's love for music is apparent and contagious. My kids love their lessons and practice without being asked. We look forward to our time at the studio each week and have much appreciation for Andrew and Deanna's family." Read more

Elaine B. says, "Dean Kline has had a big impact on my son's life. Marshall started taking guitar lessons from Mr. Dean in 5th grade. In middle school, Marshall joined one of Mr. Dean's bands, a praise band. They practiced once a month and performed a few times during the year. Marshall looked forward to every practice and enjoyed spending time with his new friends. After learning to play guitar, Marshall took bass lessons from Mr. Dean. Marshall joined the praise band at school and continued to play guitar or bass until he graduated. He is a sophomore in college and plays in the praise band on chapel days, at Disciple Now Events and youth camps. Both of our boys attended Cotillion and enjoyed it. They learned etiquette, dances, cell phone etiquette, made new friends and had fun at each class. Mr. Dean is organized and relates well to kids. Mr. Dean also taught a group dance lesson at my daughter's 16th birthday party. She gave him a list of songs that she liked. He talked the list over with me. He taught them several line dances at the party and it was a blast! One of the things I most appreciate about Dean is that he is a "gate keeper." There are a lot of great songs with lyrics that are not appropriate for kids. He was able to give Marshall a great foundation in music, introduce him to genres and artists but I didn't worry about the lyrics because I knew Dean was also protecting his heart and mind. 5 stars are not enough! I highly recommend Mr. Dean as your child's music or cotillion teacher. " Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I came into Danny's lessons as an experienced player, and I think he does a great job of identifying areas of improvement and exposing me to new ways of thinking about music, not just guitar. Danny has a welcoming personality and I look forward to chatting and getting guidance every week. I would recommend Danny to anyone who is looking to improve their ear, their technique and groove.
