I started playing the piano at the age of seven and have been playing ever since. Primarily a classical pianist I am always thankful for the incredible repertoire that we enjoy as pianists. The depth of compositions from over the past five centuries is a truly wonderful thing. As a freelance pianist I do also play many other styles of music from jazz to pop but classical music is closest to my heart.

Bill M. says, "Wow! That's my feeling whenever I complete a music lesson with Vance as my instructor. Vance is a multi-talented virtuoso when it comes to music and styles, being classically trained. Whether you are looking for the basics of a three chord beat, lessons in improvisation for rock or jazz, or are looking to become proficient in classical music repertoire, up to intense music theory, I have found Vance to be a great resource. He has the patience of a saint, the talent of a master, and is really easy to work with and study under. Vance emphasizes technique so that one doesn't start out with bad habits, and fall into the trap of not being able to progress to higher levels. I found this to be so important as time went on. I have personally worked with Vance for over 4 years. Started out just wanting to learn some riffs to add to rhythm, for songs of my age (70's prog rock), and within a couple of lessons, decided that classical guitar and technique were a better challenge. Vance is up for it all. He can pick up a piece of unknown music and within minutes, perform it practically flawlessly. But a teacher also has to be capable of adapting to a student's needs and playing/reading capabilities. Vance is superb at that; he's so talented. Long review, but if you've made it to this point, do yourself or your potential student a favor, and meet up with Vance. He is selfless with his time and dedication. What more could you want in a teacher capable of so many forms and styles of guitar or keyboards? A+++, 5 Stars! You owe it to yourself.. Beginner or Advanced or Intermediate! -Bill Moyer" Read more

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
