Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually begin lessons by learning more about the student's goals, and what drew them to the instrument in the first place. I also take note of their equipment and help them find a local violin shop if they haven't already to help them address any maintenance issues.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from Sam Houston State University and extensive summer training from programs and institutions such as Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Dylana Jenson Workshop, the MasterWorks Festival, and the Saarburg International Chamber Music Festival.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
This studio offers a variety of enrollment options to suit your skill level and availability. I help students book and prepare for their first lessons during their orientation call.
Students can choose from 25 or 50-minute lessons. In both cases, they can choose to either get a pay-as-you-go lesson package or get a monthly membership for a reserved weekly lesson time.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching private violin lessons in 2013, during my undergraduate degree.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with many beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, with ages ranging from 4 to 78 years old. For the most part, we work on advancing through classical music with a combination of supporting etudes, scales, and excerpts, though occasionally I incorporate fiddling and folk music into their lessons.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Not long ago I was helping a student play through duets for the first time. I asked her what she thought of duets, and she said "it felt like flying!" I'm so glad I was able to be part of that process!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you're ready to put in the time for regular practice and study.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Particularly for online lessons, I would make sure that you have access to a reliable violin shop local to you. This is so important for basic violin maintenance, such as changing a string or fixing a peg slip. If you need help finding a violin shop, feel free to reach out!
