Mansfield Piano Instruction

Alan Spinks · Mansfield, TX

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

I took piano lessons for about 7 years when I was young. Later I started playing songs like Burt Bacharach tunes. I went to UNT in Denton for a jazz piano performance major for a few years. Even though I received my BBA in marketing, I still have all my practice material from that period in my life at UNT. This can all be very helpful to my students as they progress beyond the basics.

I spent about two years of countless hours perfecting over 1000 tabs which are hit songs mostly from the 60s - 90s with chords over the lyrics. I use these tabs with chords in order to teach adults who want to learn to play piano a fun and enjoyable way of learning via the top hit songs. I believe it is important to learn all the basic chords, scales and inversions in the beginning. The way I teach, with encouragement and posive reinforcement, while learning to play favorite songs is, I believe, the quickest and most effective straight line method to learning how to play piano while having fun! It is very stimulating to both my students and me when my students learn how to play their favorite songs rather quickly.

I got inspired knowing I have the tools, patience and a natural ability for teaching beginners and intermediate adult students to play the hits quickly. This is such a joy seeing students learn quickly using my Fast Track Piano Lessons method.

What do you love most about your job?

Meeting new students and seeing them progress and learn to play songs quickly.

What types of students have you worked with?

I only teach adults. I have students from 23 years of age to 72. I have had students from as far away as Napal.

Tell us about your passion for teaching

One of my passions is seeing my students sing via the PA system I have next to the Roland Fantom G8 I teach with. I encourage singing after they learn to play songs. I do understand some people are really shy and that is ok and not required to learn to play piano. However, I can help with vocals if needed. Everyone can learn to sing if they can hear themselves. This is why singers use monitors. There is a natural process of developing an ear which happens as you go along, just like there is a natural tendency to develop muscle memory in your fingers as you practice and learn piano. It is really quite amazing how people discover they have talent they never knew they had before. Remember, music is a universal language and is so very satisfying mentally and also naturally relieves stress.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

Well, like anything, you first have to develop a good habit of practice which typically takes 60+ days. This period is so important for beginners to guard against getting discouraged. Second you get out what you put into it. I believe 30 minutes minimum 3 times a week ( which is not much) is enough to keep moving forward with my system of teaching. Also, as you learn to play songs, a natural motivation tends to kick in and you want to excel and want to practice more and learn more songs.
