Whether in-person or over video-chat, Don’s passion for music & teaching makes lessons always feel fun and engaging. He provides videos and sheet music/tabs to refer back to when I’m practicing and is always available for answering questions or providing additional resources. Eric W. says, "I'm loving my lessons with Dave, and I'm making a lot of progress. I've taken guitar lessons with 3 teachers in the last ~5 years, and these lessons are easily the most valuable. I feel like it only took 1 or 2 lessons for Dave to figure out my current skill level and start building from there. Most importantly, he's actually teaching me to play guitar from first principles, rather than teaching me to play specific songs. I highly recommend him!" Read more

George C. says, "I huge endorsement for Steven. You are learning from a concert performer that is purely focused on your success. You will enjoy listening to him play as much as learning yourself. He has endless patients to ensure that you are building the fundamentals needed to reach your goals. Many teachers will let you short cut your way through the learning process which may have you playing a specific melody faster. However, you will build a bunch of bad habits that will limit your potential, slow you down, and ultimately another teacher will have to fix later. Don’t delay…get started…just pick up the guitar for 15 minutes a day to start and follow his direction." Read more

Naveena G. says, "Mr. Cook has been a God sent to our family. Our son is 8years old and he used to take lessons from a local guitar store here in Pooler, Georgia . I wasn't very happy with what was being taught so I posted on lessons.com for a guitar instructor. Mr. Cook was the first one to respond to us and we decided to give him a try. We were super impressed with his approach to teaching, his patience and gentleness. He is very encouraging and motivates him greatly. You can tell that he is passionate about teaching and developing the student. Our son has not only improved in the last couple of months with him, he actually enjoys taking lessons and looks forward to class every week. I'm so grateful to Mr. Cook and to lessons.com for helping me find the BEST guitar instructor ever!! My only regret is that I cannot give him 100 stars!!!" Read more

Ethan S. says, "I quit guitar when I was a kid because I didn’t really have the money to get lessons, now that I’m an adult I started lessons with Kenton and it’s been great. I slacked a bit when I was supposed to practice a song I wasn’t interested in, and he remembered a band I said I liked from 4 months ago in our first session we had and showed me how to do the strum pattern, effectively switch chords. And gave tips on how to get a foundation down for singing with the guitar without losing time. Then when the lesson was concluded it went a bit longer of us just chatting. That’s something he does a lot instead of just being a teacher who shows how to do something answers questions and that’s it. He goes beyond that and takes extra steps to keep someone a bit more easily side tracked engaged. And if you ever say something similar to “ah man I’m not doing great, maybe guitar isn’t for me”. He’ll motivate you. So no matter if you’re an adult realizing you wanna learn or if you’re finding a teacher so your kid can learn, this is the teacher." Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

My son has been taking lessons from Don for about 4 years now, and we can't say enough good things about him! My son has excelled and always looks forward to his lessons, Don teaches him songs he loves and really goes above and beyond to make sure he has all the tools he needs. He is also flexible with our schedule and responds quickly to messages. My son loves guitar and music and we really feel like we hit the jackpot having Don as his teacher!

Steven has been an excellent teacher of a wide range of guitar styles - classical, brazilian, spanish, and more. He has a strong background in classical guitar, with decades of experience in performance and instruction. No matter what style, he can identify ways to improve your technique and expression, with lessons that apply to all genres. He patiently points out important lessons about hand positions, dynamics, tempo, and melody that begin to build up a strong basis of technique over the course of a few lessons. After several months of practicing these tips, I was surprised at how natural my guitar playing had become and how much my overall playing had improved. I strongly recommend Steven's instruction.

Neil is wonderful! He was so good at inspiring my son and getting him excited about lessons when he wasn’t in the mood . Neil is so good with kids, he meets them at their level and makes lessons fun and “cool”. And he is such an amazing guitarist! I wouldn’t look further if you need guitar lessons.

Kenton is great! He has been teaching my 12 year old son and my son loves it! My son is not one to come out of his shell and Kenton had him smiling and talking from lesson one! He took something my son liked to do and taught him to love it!
