He exudes excitement for playing the cello which, in turn, motivates me to "not sweat the small stuff" in learning cello. He was able to work and create homework assignments based on the materials I already had and encouraged me to send updates or questions before our next lesson. Matthew Von Doran ~ Guitar Coach

Benjamin S. says, "I've been working with Matthew consistently since just before the start of the Pandemic and it has been a delight every step of the way, even when I moved out of town shortly after I started lessons. I was surprised at how well Skype lessons with Matthew actually work! The course itself is thoughtfully planned and Matthew adapts its content and the sessions to the individual learner, allowing for tangents and deep dives into areas of interest, such as theory, composition, gear, and other important areas of learning the guitar. Matthew also goes out of his way to provide for his students, offering Skype lessons at any time of day, and is always open to talk shop and share music. Truly a one-of-a-kind teaching experience and I highly recommend this teacher." Read more

George Lesiw Music

Larry L. says, "George is an amazing musician and a great guy. I bought some guitars as artwork in my house because I’ve always thought they were cool. The only problem was I didn’t know how to play them at all like 0 and it certainly was obviously that I have no natural ability. I know lots of friends that play at really high levels but I knew hanging around them I would never learn anything because it would turn into a social event. I knew I needed a teacher, a real teacher. I found George on this site and luckily he lives only minutes away. From day one he was sure that I learn something at every lesson. Difficult task as I’m not a good student and my attention span is pathetic. If I’m not good at something right away I loose interest. George is so patient and supportive that I won’t give up. I only have time for one lesson a week sometimes less due to my job but lessons with George are one of the few things I look forward to going to. Thanks " Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

Ahmad is an easy going teacher who kicks my butt at the same time. He's a stickler for the foundational elements, which is exactly what I need to take my guitar playing to the next level. He is truly interested in seeing me improve. I'm a songwriter and I need to up my game to be able to hang with co-writers who are more advanced musically, and I also have the goal to play out at writers rounds and open mics and I need to get a little more proficient for that. We're playing acoustic. We've done both Skype and in-person lessons. Highly recommended. Good location.

I'm an odd duck in terms of my guitar playing -- I've played on and off for years, and have finally decided that what I want to play more than anything else is music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Lucky for me there's a man named Allan Alexander who has published several books of this historical music -- and lucky for me I found John Veit! During the pandemic I followed the folk learning path from Fender Play, an online system which was free for new users at that time. It filled in a number of gaps in my knowledge, but didn't have any way to get detailed feedback from instructors and didn't really incorporate any techniques for classical guitar. I finally decided several months ago that I needed some one-on-one lessons with someone in person. This website (lessons.com) led me to John. Lessons have been *awesome*. I came in with a number of songs I wanted to play better -- starting with "Jesu the Joy of Man's Desiring" which was my mom's favorite song. After watching & listening to me play it, John was able to give me advice on how to handle some of the awkward transitions more smoothly. It's taken some practice to incorporate those changes but they've made a huge difference in how the song sounds. So far my lessons have covered advice on specific songs, music theory, and playing technique. I'm learning *tons* and I couldn't be happier. Definitely the start of a beautiful relationship. I highly recommend John!

Bill is meticulous and patient. We had custom requests for the lesson plan listened and really does care. Bill knows music and his experience is helpful from a style perspective. He is creative and has made recommendations to modify style and changes improving the music. He breaks down complex music (the learning process) making it approachable and less intimidating to learn. Bill is respectful, positive and easy to communicate with. We found him on this site and so pleased to have connected with him for these lessons.

Ben is an outstanding music educator and mentor. My son, Isaac, started with him a year ago and has grown by leaps and bounds. Ben is knowledgeable, supportive, and patient, and he approaches each lesson and question with the utmost professionalism. He has worked consistently with Isaac toward his college and career goals by pushing and challenging him to not only improve on his preferred style, but also has encouraged him to branch into different musical genres to make him a more well-rounded artist. We feel so fortunate to have found Ben, and we cannot say enough about how much we appreciate his involvement in Isaac’s musical journey.
