Freya Downey Viola And Violin Studio
About
I believe in a holistic student-led approach to teaching lessons - tailoring lessons to each student's individual needs, whether looser or more technical. Authenticity and individuality are crucial to building a musical life. I encourage my students to ask questions and help them use critical thinking to arrive at an answer. I have more than 10 years of teaching experience with a studio of students ranging from small children to adults. I hold a Bachelors of music from the University of Oklahoma and a Masters of Music from Baylor University. I am currently working on a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Viola Performance at Boston University. My goal is to teach my students how to practice effectively, so they can feel confident in and out of lessons. I encourage creativity in all of my students by teaching them how to listen to themselves, the world around them, their instruments, and as much music as possible. Many of my students work on technical exercises and traditional repertoire as well as exploring composition. I am trained as a Suzuki teacher and utilize various teaching methods by Karen Tuttle, Dorothy DeLay, Mimi Zweig, Heidi Castleman, and more.
