About

I teach songwriting, composition, arrangement, music theory, and improvisation. I also teach piano, but with an emphasis on improvisation, arrangement, and songwriting, all based on a very solid foundation of music theory. This method ultimately gives my students the ability to play the piano with a lot of flexibility and creative freedom.

I offer a free introductory lesson, with no obligation, where I demonstrate the method that I teach.

I enjoy helping my students obtain an understanding of how songs are arranged and composed, and then see them start to create songs of their own. When a student gets excited about an original composition or an original arrangement they have created, and then realizes that they can replicate those results with an infinite number of creative possibilities (different musical genres and different subject matter), I can't help but get excited also.

Treyans enthusiastic approach to teaching and confidence in me is monumental as he transfers his knowledge. From the start he quickly recognized my strengths and weaknesses and has been skillfully filling in the gaps so that I see the strides Im making from week to week. His foundational theory exercises are key. Treyan has a unique talent in personalizing lessons and explaining concepts. He provides plenty of exciting challenges, is patient, and is a delightful and genuine individual. What more can I say? He is an remarkable find!

I had a great experience with Treyan. I’ve played the piano for a long time, but I never learned much theory or improvisation. I explained what I was looking to learn, and Treyan immediately started coming up with plan that fit my experience and end goals. He really knows his stuff and is extremely student focused. Highly recommended!

I am a classically trained pianist. I had 12 years of piano lessons growing up and have continued to play piano as an adult. However, as I listened to artists like 2Cellos and the Piano Guys, I started feeling stuck in my classical training and wished I had the ability to be more creative and contemporary in my music. I considered training in another instrument until I heard of Treyan Porter and the type of piano training he does. I started taking lessons a little over 2 years ago. Treyan started me with some intensive theory training, most of which was new to me. I also started doing some basic arranging using guitar chord sheets and lead sheets. Soon I progressed to composing my own music. None of this has been easy, but Treyan has been an excellent teacher and guide in a way that has kept it from becoming too frustrating and helping it to become a satisfying endeavor. He has extensive knowledge of theory and songwriting in every genre and has worked at both for many years. He is very professional and patient. He is also very flexible and will help a student work and learn in whatever genre of music they enjoy or want to be more proficient in. I would definitely recommend him for a student who has a basic piano background and is looking to be more creative and be able to do more with music than just read from a page. At this point, I continue to learn more advanced theory, and composing continues to be a challenge, but I can now sit down with a guitar chord sheet and play a simple arrangement in many cases because I know the basics of chords, rhythm, and style that go into arranging music. It’s been great to expand my musical knowledge and abilities!

Taking lessons under Treyan, I have seen my piano skills and theoretical understanding improve already more from being with him for now 4 months versus my years and years of piano lessons growing up. He is knowledgable in all genres, and does a really good job of helping me understand not only the how, but the why behind chords resolve, are altered, or chord progressions follow a specific pattern. Worth every penny without a doubt.

I have had an amazing experience taking lessons from Treyan. I am an adult student, who knew next to nothing about piano when I started. Treyan did, and continues to do, an amazing job at listening to what my interests are, and then completely tailoring his lessons to my interests and goals. I was interested in Treyan as a teacher after chatting with him because of the creative, flexible, and improvistational way he teaches his students to play. He has a strong core system to ensure you learn the important theory, chords, and scales, while also combining an intuitive rhythm method for learning songs. I have been taking lessons for six months, and am astounded by not only how quickly I am learning, but how much I am enjoying the process. Best of all, Treyan is extremely responsive and diligent in his prep before and after lessons. Ive had him send me instructional videos on the weekends, print and notate music for me, and listen/find songs that he thinks I would be interested in. If you cant tell already from my review, I would highly recommend Treyan for any age student who is interested in learning and growing as a piano player.

    Frequently asked questions

First off, I offer a free introductory lesson, with no obligation, for each potential new student, in which I demonstrate the method that I teach. This allows both myself and the client to see if this what they are looking for.

If it is a good fit, and the individual decides to continue with lessons, I create a unique plan, catered to that student, to allow them to accomplish their goals.

10,000 plus hours of practice, performing, teaching, research, writing, composing, arranging, recording, producing, publishing, etc.

I currently offer two lesson packages, with lesson duration and monthly tuition as follows:

    Package option 1: Four 60-minute lessons–$200 tuition ($50 per 60-minute lesson)
    Package option 2: Two 60-minute lessons–$120 tuition ($60 per 60-minute lesson)

I previously taught for the public school system, and at a private arts academy. I made the transition to starting my own business teaching privately in 2015. This has been a great move, as I have had the creative freedom to develop my own teaching method over the last 7 years.

All types. I teach all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. However, due to the more abstract nature of the concepts that I use in my teaching, I have found this method works best for teenagers and adults. Possibly pre-teen depending on the individual, but not so much younger children.

Composing my first full length musical, which was produced and performed by different musical theater companies.

I currently have a student writing their first musical, and it's nice to be able to pass on some of the tips that I learned.

Research, and trial and error. That's why I offer a free introductory lesson. Until you have actually seen what the teacher offers in person, it is difficult to commit. And it makes complete sense. I wouldn't hire a professional to work on a project on my home, without meeting them, discussing the project, and getting a detailed estimate.

Mainly, what are the students goals? I have learned over the years that they can be quite varried and unique. Not only do we not all learn the same whay, but we also have different goals. And a teacher who doesn't take that into account simply isn't doing their job well.
