Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I developed my own program, covering the most basic but at the same time more important as Right hand, left hand technique, theory about musical notes, sight reading, right way to handle the guitar, performing techniques, the right repertoire for basic, intermediate and advance players.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
10 years of school at the national conservatory of music, 3 years at the national institute of fine arts. ( degrees compared as PhD) and 23 years teaching at academy, university, elementary, private, 6 years conducting the youth classical guitar orchestra and the classical guitar orchestra, plus concert with orchestras, as solo and master classes.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
120 dollars monthly, one class per week and if I travel I charge 200
How did you get started teaching?
I remember my first class were with kids 5 to7 years old, it was a challenge, to start teaching in this music academy, now that I remember it was more like a test. Other teachers who were looking for the same job resign the next day, I was in this class for 3 weeks and I have to confess it was not easy, after that time the principal told me to teach the advance class, but at that moment I was really enjoying my time with my students so I started to teach both classes, it was great.
What types of students have you worked with?
all ages
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I’m really proud of several of my students, one of them won a contest and now he is ambassador in his school, and at the same time the university offered him a full scholarship to study in the music program, other 5 students are ambassadors in a music program at their schools, I had a performance at the salt Lake arts festival which was great to interact with other musicians in other musical culture backgrounds. Also performing in the conference center at down town in “ light of the Nations” (luz de las naciones) a great program of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When I was a student I really love the guitar, some teachers were really nice, other seems really professionals when performing but not when teaching, I remember taking lessons from this guy, he always was concern about me and my progress, he also was a great musician I learn from him not just as a student but also as a classical guitarist to enjoy my students progress and achievements, look for that, for a teacher who his greatest achievements are not just his performances but at the same time his students.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is the best way to practice to achieve my goals ?
do I have to practice a bunch of hours?
is it a easy way to learn to read musical notes?
why when I play my fingers hurt?
Will I be performing in one month?
