About

I have studied with the same teachers as Brittney Spears, Justin Timberlake, David Archuleta, Miley Cyrus, Lil Nas X, as well as having a solid classical base. I sang with the Utah Symphony, Utah Chamber Artists, Boston Pops, on PBS, and more.

High school students to seniors have benefitted from our lessons. Those with a genuine interest in learning about their voice and improving their singing enjoy what we do. We've helped a professional soloist reach his high notes, a church ensemble improve their technique, a shy soprano build her confidence, a karaoke DJ reduce strain and discover a problem that needed medical attention, a guitar player to step in and sing lead, and a chiropractor be heard better by his wife.

We do it all in both English and Spanish.

Developing your full vocal capability gives you power without force, highs and lows without strain, bright and dark combinations, and many other features on demand. To reach that spot, your vocal anatomy needs to adjust to new coordinations that feel different than what you might expect. I help you recognize where you are at and what your next step is.

A few things I can help you with:

Eliminating the break between your upper and lower registers.

Extend your range to it's max.

Sing all the notes without strain.

Phrasing, dynamics, musicality, musicianship.

Different sounds for different genres.

Sight reading, ear training.

Breathing.

Solo vs chorus

Performance psychology, confidence, overcome fear.

I’ve been taking vocal lessons with Roger for over six months now. He’s very talented and qualified, with outstanding credentials, so I know my vocal training is in the best hands! He’s patient, and has a very approachable teaching style that makes everything so comfortable and natural! Whether you’re brand new to singing, or want to hone-in and perfect your technique, I couldn’t recommend anyone more than Roger. He shares new, outside tools and techniques with me every week, and under his guidance I truly feel I can take my talents from good, to out of this world exceptional!

    Frequently asked questions

We meet for a trial lesson. We find out the student's interest and goals. We go over their background in music. I do a diagnostic of their vocal production. We talk about what's happening and how it feels. Depending on the student's skill level, the first lesson can be about preparing the body and vocal folds to sing or diving in to a particular vocal issue.

My education includes both academic and private study. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish with a music minor from Brigham Young University and a certificate of vocology from the National Center for Voice and Speech (affiliated with the University of Utah). I have over 20 years of private study, including 10 years of private piano and 11 years of private voice and professional education from International Voice Teachers of Mix (IVTOM). I am also a member of the Pan-American Vocology Association (PAVA) and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

I wanted to understand the difference between choir singing and a solo performer which led me to the International Voice Teachers of Mix (IVTOM) and later to the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Pan-American Vocology Association (PAVA).
I've worked with professional performers and also with those who have had no formal training, from teens to seniors.
I love to attend Utah Symphony concerts, musicals, plays, karaoke, and other performing arts in the Salt Lake valley.
A quality teacher has worked to develop their own voice and their teaching skills, and they continue to do so. There is no final end point. I perform, take lessons and classes, attend conferences, and teach. I find the world of voice fascinating, and I love sharing it with my students.
What is your dream? What would you love to do with your voice? If it really means something to you, then you're more likely to do the work to get there. That includes the investment of both time and money. Quality musical education requires both.
