About

One of the richest feelings in the world is giving the gift of learning music to someone. I strive to meet the individual needs of each student in a way that is enriching to them.

I have been teaching music since 1987 and have traveled all over the world as a performer and lecturer.

I hold a BM in Performance (Jazz Studies) and an MM in Composition from Shenandoah Conservatory. I served for 20 years as a guitarist and bassist with the United States Marine Corps Band and the US Army Band "Pershing's Own".

Dan tailors lessons to the student, and helps you focus on areas you need development with material you find interesting and engaging. Theres no one-size-fits all approach here! Hes also great at explaining things, and treats all of his students with respect & care.

Dan is a friendly guy who has an impressive knowledge of guitar playing, guitar players, thousands of songs, and all kinds of fancy music theory. His lessons are relaxed and fun.

Dan is great. He is incredibly knowledgeable about music, not just guitar. He has helped me with everything from shredding and accuracy to country style guitar. Whatever your goals are from writing, performing or just getting better for your own enjoyment, Dan can help you in a fun. Hes also a great person to ask about equipment as well. Im very happy I found him as my teacher!

Dan is a patient, encouraging teacher. If I’m having a hard time with some aspect, like my hand position, he takes a problem solving approach and gives me practical tips that immediately helps me improve. On top of that, he is so encouraging and kind, it makes me want to learn more.

Extremely attentive and creative instructor who tailors lessons to meet the interests of my daughter. Scheduling and payment are easy and flexible. I love witnessing how confident my daughter has grown in her abilities and love for the guitar.

    Frequently asked questions

With a beginner I take the lead for the first few lessons to make sure the student is getting off to the best start.  As soon as possible I like to incorporate some music the student likes so they can get that rush of making music.

With a more experienced student the first steps are to find out where the student is and where they want to be.  This allows me to fill in any knowledge and technique gaps and form a plan for the student to follow towards their musical goals.

Bachelor of Music in Performance (Jazz Studies)
    Master of Music in Composition

30 years touring and recording experience.

    30-minute recurring lessons $53 each.
    60-minute recurring lessons $87 each.

I began teaching in 1987 at a small shop in my hometown of Benton Arkansas.

I didn't really know what I was doing at first but I enjoyed teaching so I always stuck with it even while I was touring.

I have worked with students as young as 4 and as old as 92.  I have also had the immense pleasure of working with special needs students including several blind students.

I am very proud of the work my students put into maintaining their practice throughout the quarantine.  I worked very hard to make their lessons as enriching as possible while transitioning to remote learning and they all stepped up and met the challenge!

Always hire the teacher with the most teaching experience.  There are no requirements to teach in most stores beyond an ability to play but the truth of the matter is being able to play and being able to teach really aren't the same skill.

What music makes them feel real emotions when they hear it?

Do they have any aspirations of being a professional musician?

Do they have any specific goals in mind such as performing for their family or joining a band?
