About
Playing satisfying music from the beginning is the best motivation for learning. Playing by ear is a much-neglected yet enjoyable skill which, along with improvisation, was the foundation for the great composers, as well as pop, rock and jazz musicians. I have met the needs and desires of many students by teaching that skill, as well as music reading, theory, and piano technique and repertoire.
Students have learned to play well with great satisfaction from my lessons. I have a degree in music from the University of Redlands. I have composed many pieces for piano as well as jazz ensemble, and have been performing jazz in the Washington D.C. area for thirty years.
I offer the following as parts of a custom course of study or as a comprehensive plan:

I often demonstrate examples of music that can be learned and then begin with some hands-on experience appropriate to the individual. Some duet playing can often be accomplished right away with beginners and helps to build confidence as well as rhythmic skill.
Music-making is the greatest joy in my life and I enjoy sharing that joy as students learn and develop. I love seeing the creative process unfold as skills and experience grow.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My university education in music, including classical piano, organ, choral music, and theory has given me a strong background, but my subsequent experience in a variety of musical genres and traditions, including jazz, blues, ragtime, musical theater, classical harpsichord and the Indian tabla has given me a broad perspective and understanding that I am able to share. I play hand drums and Latin percussion and that is sometimes a valuable addition to the lesson.
