Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually diagnose where the student is in case they have previous knowledge and in case we have to start from 0, I start by teaching how to read music.
I like to "interview" the student goals and needs and adapt the lessons to their objectives, it is not the same to teach a pro than to teach someone that just wants a hobby.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a Music Master in Piano Performance, have been teaching piano for the last 15 years and work at the Piano Department of Costa Rican National University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $60 for the hourly lesson. It includes follow up during the week, and listening and correcting homework via text message and recordings.
How did you get started teaching?
I started in my freshman year of University, a long time ago...
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from 5-90 years old. I have taught a lot of beginners from scratch and also worked with professionals that participate in international piano competitions.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love to accompany my students in the process of giving their first recital. They are usually very nervous at first, but after they play they feel fantastic and super motivated!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Go for it! Don't let your fear tell you otherwise. If you have a piano to practice and motivation to do it it's the only thing you need!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Am I going to commit to practice for achieving my goals? Am I going to take piano lessons because I love it or because my parents or someone else made me do it? Am I ready to have a unique experience performing my most beloved piano pieces?
