What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Establish skill level and aptitude. Assign practice routines of scales, playing techniques and songs accordingly.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 5 years experience teaching tutoring and counseling. I've worked with age groups from 5-25 and older.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
30 (1/2 hour) 45 (3/4 hour) and 60 (1 hour). Most lessons are 30-45 minutes.
How did you get started teaching?
As an assistant teacher, substitute teacher and after school tutor, for Alebemarle County Schools, in Virginia, grades 5-12, shortly after graduating from Indiana University. I also worked as a Strengthening Families Program teacher for a social services, working with at risk youth and their families; working with two different age cohorts: 5-12 and 13-18 years old. Also, I worked as a counselor, in foster care, for males in two age groups; 12-17 and 18-22.
What types of students have you worked with?
Mostly beginner to intermediate learners, from 5-35 years old. A few advanced learners, as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Live concerts, at the Jefferson and the Paramount Theater, in Charlottesville.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher that has a freindly personality and challenges you, tactfully.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How much time are you willing to dedicate to practice? What days work best in your schedule? How many songs do you want to learn? What artists are your favorite? Do you see yourself as a hobbyist, a solo performer, a session musician, a recording artist, a band member? What are your goals, musically?
