About this pro

My specialty lies in acoustic fingerstyle playing, which is ironic considering it is the style I thought I would never be able to perform!  After years of taking classical guitar lessons at the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center, I've broaden my skills to include modern styles and now I am ready to teach acoustic guitar to any and all that want to learn.  Whether you're new to the instrument or looking for a new style to play, my lessons are meant to help you achieve your goals by catering to what you need so you can play whatever music you want to.

I enjoy helping students achieve their goals and giving them rewarding experiences.  Seeing them excited to learn and celebrating their success always gives me a good feeling.  Some of my most proudest moments were when my students learned something on their own without my help.  That's when I know I've done my job right.

Kevin is a great teacher! He is very patient and personable. He individualizes his lessons according to what his students are interested in and goes at their learning pace. I have been taking guitar lessons with him for 2 years now. Started in person then via online when covid hit, I was a first time guitar player when I started and while it has been challenging, Kevin has inspired me along the way to keep practicing and it has been worth it. I have really enjoyed our lessons and am so happy to continue with him virtually since I just moved to Oregon.

Kevin is so patient! I had never even touched a guitar until a month before starting lessons with Kevin! He takes the time to find individual learning techniques that work for my brain! He ends every lesson with a positive comment!

I have been taking lessons with Kevin for around 6 months. In that time my playing and ability to read sheet music have drastically improved. He does a great job explaining guitar theory without it being confusing for someone with no background in music. Very easy to work with, great teacher, and a great guy.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

My first goal is to understand what my new student's goals are.  I then teach them the basics so that no matter what genre of music they want to play, they have the foundation to broaden their skills and acheive their goals.  After that I help them move on to advance styles/techniques to the point where they won't even need me anymore

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

- Bachelor of Music Degree from Old Dominion University

- 6 years of classical guitar lessons

- Over 800 hours of teaching experience

- Member of the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with many types of students from children to the elderly.  Each of them had their own strengths and weaknesses and it was my job to help them maximize their progress.  Some were quick learners while others needed more time and patience.  For the prior, I always challenged them to find out where their limits are and then push them.  For the latter, I always took my time with them and made sure they understood everything they needed to before moving on.
