My teaching approach: I try to find music that the student likes and use it to create enjoyable lessons. I think guitar lessons should be fun as well as effective in teaching guitar. I'm not super strict, but I do expect students to put in a reasonable amount of effort. My influences are: I learned the guitar by playing along with Beatles records, then later I moved on to Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd and all the other great classic rock bands. When I decided to pursue music professionally I started studying other styles, like jazz and country. My biggest influences are Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Scofield. Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas: Hampton, Newport News, Yorktown Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours: I teach every day except Sunday. My hours are very flexible. Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Slide Guitar, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: First we would go over the different parts of the guitar. Then I show them how to hold it properly and how to press the strings down onto the frets to get a clear sound. After that, we would try some simple melodies and two or three chords. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: Tuning the guitar is always the first thing. Then we go over whatever the student is currently working on. I will make corrections or suggestions for improvement. If the student is ready, we may start work on something new. We may also spend time listening to music and talking about different guitar parts. Sometimes, even if a part is too advanced for the student, I will take some time show them how it is being played just so they can see it for themselves. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: One that practices regularly and learns the material I give him or her. I especially like students who investigate things on their own and come in with good questions.
