Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When i first meet them, we spend time talking about what their goals are for the lessons. Is it for personal fulfillment, a specific performance, a long range goal. I will then work with them through particular exercises to help me see where they are starting so I can customize my teaching.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Gettysburg College, as well as an M.A. in English Literature. I have been a licensed Theatre Arts and English teacher since 2001. I worked professionally in all aspects of theatre in NYC after graduating from undergrad. I ran a theatre company in Staten Island, Theatre San Greal, for several years, working as a director, designer and performer. I am a VHSL certified theatre coach, and have won multiple directing awards for my high school performances. I also work regularly with local community theatres.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$40.00/lesson or tutoring session, lessons typically run 1 hour. If a lesson is held online, the rate drops to $35.00/lesson. Lessons cancelled more than 24 hours in advance are rescheduled with no additional fees. Lessons cancelled less than 24 hours will be charged $10.00 for cancellation and the lesson will be made up for the regular fee at a later time.
How did you get started teaching?
I grew up helping my grandmother set up her classroom every year and grading papers. I started teaching piano and voice in high school, and have been doing it ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages and all experience levels.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who has your goals as their goals. Make sure they are giving you what you want, not what they think you need. That doesn't mean that if you don't want to practice, you should not hire them, but if your goal is to do film acting, the thrust of your study should be film acting.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
