My teaching approach:

I have been teaching guitar for over 2 years. I was a teacher for All About Music in southeast Roanoke, VA as well as my home. I own two Epiphone Les Pauls, a 6 string Fended acoustic, a Fender 12 string acoustic, a Fender P-Bass and a Marshall combo amp.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

The first meeting is an introduction/interview, for which there is no charge. The student's level of interest, goals, and influences are assessed, and regular lessons are scheduled. The first lesson is devoted to teaching the names of the strings, as well as finger positions, fret numbers, and so on. After this, I teach the students the 7 natural Major chords and perhaps an easy song or riff. Lesson two focuses on minor chords and tablature reading. The student's playing ability is assessed according to their ability to grasp the material as presented.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I believe that a student learns best by playing what they love. Once a student has mastered basic chord shapes and scale patterns and can read tablature I teach them to play the songs they love to listen to. Once they are ready, I encourage them to write their own music and to find their own voice, both through jam sessions with other musicians as well as recording their own compositions.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

The ideal guitar student is a motivated, passionate, creative, driven individual who is determined to play the music they have inside of them. Natural talent does not matter so much as desire to learn, diligence and persistence.
