The Music Nerd: Lessons, Tutoring, And Coaching
About
My name is Julia, and I’m an enthusiastic music teacher- specializing in teens and adults! I earned my B. M. of Music Education from East Carolina University, and more recently finished my M. M. in Music Education at Old Dominion University. I am a pianist, percussionist, singer, composer/arranger, and songwriter; given my skillset, I can offer you any combination of focus areas in your lessons. I would love to discuss your goals with you!
Beginning in my early years, I took piano lessons until high school. I focused on piano, writing my songs, and choir. By the time high school started, I joined band. Before I knew it, I had arrived at ECU specializing in percussion. I also have roots in less formal music-making: as I learned piano, my dad taught me how to play drum set and helped me record my own songs. Of course, we’d always have to warm up/down with some Nirvana or System of a Down.
My musical pursuits include: writing/recording songs, transposing/transcribing music for myself and others, composing programmatic music for instrumental ensembles, creating exercises unique to the needs of my student(s),
I specialize in music learners who think they missed the boat. I love assessing each student’s past experiences, learning style, sources of motivation, and- most importantly- personal goals. I’m here for you. There is no finish line that grants someone the right to say they “can play piano.” I just want to help my students expand their knowledge of how music works, in relation to their own individual goals.
Whether you want to be able to pick up a sheet music book and play your favorite movie soundtracks, accompany your church choir, write songs to play with your band, or play Beetles songs in your room on your keyboard- I can help you get to where you want to be. Music is supposed to be fun, and I ensure it stays that way.
