About

My teaching approach:

Music theory is essential, but it's only part of being a musician. I start by helping you learn to play the instrument and develop a voice. As you're ready for it, I'll teach you all the theory. My biggest goal is to teach you how to grow as a musician. Once you've learned how to approach it, you can discover your potential as a musician for the rest of your life. I will "teach you to fish" and work myself out of a job. When we're done, I want us to be peers.

My influences are:

Jerry Cantrell, Jonny Greenwood, Sonny Landreth, John Frusciante, Explosions in the Sky, Steve Vai, Earth Wind & Fire, Prince And just about every other guitarist who's ever done noteworthy.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio

Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas:

My studio in downtown Tacoma.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

The first session is free, so there's no pressure as we get to know each other. I ask a lot of questions about your music and your goals, and try to understand exactly what you want. If you can play, I'll ask you to play your favorite songs/riffs/chords, we might jam a little. It's a musical conversation. I'll give you a couple tips. Afterwards I think about you for a couple hours and decide what I'll show you in the first 10 sessions or so.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I'm as much coach as teacher. I will start with showing you something you don't know how to do yet. Then I'll briefly explain how we're going to learn it. Then, I'll walk you through the process. By the end, you'll have developed at least some proficiency, know exactly what to practice this week, and probably be really excited.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

You! If you're willing to work on your music as hard as I do, let's get together.
