My teaching approach: The primary focus of the approach I use is HOW to play, rather than WHAT to play, with an emphasis on mechanics, fretboard knowledge and ear training. My aim is for you to develop the skills to play anything you wish, and not simply the things I show you. With the guitar, the best thing we can do for ourselves is learn how to learn. Then, no teacher and no method can hold us back. Whether you are a beginner just thinking about getting some guidance, or you've been playing for some time and feel you are ready to kick it up a notch, I can help. I will run through a short series of investigations to determine your skill set and to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and perhaps I'll ask you to play something for me. We will look at how much time you can reasonably put into guitar practice, given your personal situation and obligations, and then formulate a plan together. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: MECHANICS. We work toward an ease and efficiency in our technique, with exercises designed to help us to let go of the habits holding us back, while developing an understanding of the skills that will support our musical aspirations. KNOWLEDGE of the FRETBOARD. A command of scale and chord structures frees us from dependence on chord books, tab and the memorization of shapes and “licks” without context.​ EAR TRAINING. How do we choose which sound to produce? PLAY. Putting skills and techniques to work in creative musical situations is essential.
