About
My name is Chelsea Betz and I am a voice teacher and classical singer based out of the greater Oconomowoc area! I have a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Northwestern University where I studied voice under Theresa Brancaccio. I earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point where I studied with Susan Bender. I have been teaching private voice and piano lessons for over 10 years and continue to pursue growth in my own vocal studies as well as my ability to teach. While my main instrument is voice, I believe that any form of music-making is good for the soul. It allows us to escape, learn about ourselves, grow in confidence, speak up and share love. My main focus in lessons is cultivating a love for music and expression. Of course, I am a pedagogue to the core and will focus on bringing out the best potential and technique in all of my musicians, because you cannot fully express without first untangling tension and establishing breath support! I believe that there are days to work and days to play and do my best to ensure balance in my studio. I will challenge my students to achieve hairy, scary goals but understand the need for support, love and fun.
I understand that not everyone is confortable traveling outside of the house for lessons and am happy to work with you through Zoom!
I love enabling my students to better understand their craft and the inner-workings of their voices! Nothing beats cheering my students on as they crush their goals! While most professional musicians focus on performance, I beieve that the every-day musician should focus on growth, confidence and small achievements like singing through that long phrase on one breath, allowing the higher register to blossom and bloom and getting through that brand new song without worrying about notes and rhythms because you have put in the work, and can now enjoy the music-making process. Any day that I can enable another human to express themselves through music, is a good day.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The process depends on the student, their age, ability and initial response to meeting a new teacher. With my younger students, I focus on encouraging them to make music - whether it sounds great or not. I want them to make mistakes, so they can learn and grow. At the first lesson, we spend time getting to know one another and figuring out what the student wants from the lessons. They might want a role in the school musical, to learn that Solo & Ensemble piece in another language, they LOVE singing Disney songs or just want to be more confident and "sing high." All of these are perfect reasons for starting lessons and it is my job to help them!
I LOVE working with adult singers! Often times, they pursue lessons in order to reign in their voices after taking some time away and I love guiding them to a tension-free sound! As our bodies change, our voices change and we need to continue to tend to them as we do the rest of our body. I feel very passionately about enabling singers to trust their voices and sing without caution. Whether you are a church chorister, wanna-be pop star or want to get back into singing, I have many tools to help you achieve your goals.
