About
I began teaching guitar while being a student of the guitar, working on my bachelor’s degree in guitar performance 15 years ago. Since then I've not only developed my teaching abilities, but have developed a deep love for teaching guitar and watching students grow in their playing. I've taught hundreds of students of all ages, levels and styles of guitar. In 2011, I earned my masters degree in guitar performance. Throughout my studies I have had the priviledge of learning from terrific teachers, who not only taught me how to play, but also how to teach guitar. My degrees are in classical guitar, but I play and teach jazz, rock and roll, folk, country, pop, blues and fingerstyle extentively also.
Students can expect to have patient and thoughtful guidance as a student in my studio. I use a student centered appoach, providing my students with the specific abilites they need to do for what they want to do on the guitar. Some examples are; playing by ear, music theory, note reading, performance skills, music memorization, interpretation and improvisation.
I have extensive experience teaching young students age 5 and up and worked as the director of the Fine Arts Factory for youth in Billings, MT. I also teach many college students, working professionals and retirees.
I teach lessons, beginner through advanced, at my studio as well as online. Please check out my website for info. www.billdickman.wix.com/guitar
I like being a part of the process of students finding joy in the guitar. Also, I enjoy helping students develop their skills and overcoming obstacles - doing things they thought they couldn't do. I like developing rapport with students and their families and providing a supportive environnment in which to grow as a musician. I also like imparting skills and insights I've aquired so that students may advance quickly if they choose to.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the first lesson I like to go slowly and ask the student and or parent questions to find out what methods are going to be the most effective for that specific student, how they learn and what they're interested in. After this I select a method book that is right, such as Suzuki, Noad or Parkening method (classical), Afred or Melbay method (general guitar/steel string guitar), Mickey Baker method (Jazz) or other various method books. I may not use a book at all if the student doesn't need one or is only interested in playing by ear versus reading music.
From there I begin setting weekly goals and monitoring progress.
