Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, we start by discussing your favorite kinds of music, what your goals are, and how much practice time is realistic on a weekly basis. From there we will work on the skills needed to help you reach your goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My background includes over 25 years of studying and playing in bands, teaching thousands of guitar lessons, writing, recording and performing.
My background is mainly in rock, pop, blues, and folk music, but I have studied many other styles and can help with everything ranging from technique, music theory, buying and dialing in equipment, learning by ear, improvising, composing music, and forming or joining a band.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are $35 per half hour ($30 online) or $60 per hour ($50 online). The sessions can be done in person or online, and traveling in-home service is offered to those in the St. Charles / Geneva, IL areas.
How did you get started teaching?
Teaching was a natural progression, coming from a backgound of playing in bands, learning and writing my own music, running a recording studio, and connecting with many people in the music community.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 6 and as old as 65. It's recommed that the student have their own instrument to practice with.
All skill levels are welcome.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently was able to play the Chicago White Sox opening day at the stadium. It was a parking lot gig, we were the only band and there were thousands of people walking around.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
This is a journey, not a destination. There is a lifetime of skills to learn with music, and this is a path that you can continue on for the rest of your life. The good news is that everyone has different goals, musical prefrences, and an idea of what they want to get out of playing an instrument. There are many correct reasons to do this!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about any questions you have, nothing music releated is off limits. I can help you out with many different styles, techniques, music theory, reading music, counting rhythms, etc.
