Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I try to find out what goals the student has in mind. You teach students differently when they want to learn how to read music as compared to those that do not. If they want to play professionally, I encourage them to learn to read music and tab. If not, we learn chords and songs that they want to learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have Master's Degree in teaching. I have played the guitar for 46 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Usually $30 per lesson. I will consider discounts for quarterly payments. I can bill monthly if needed.
How did you get started teaching?
My daughter opened a music studio and asked me to take some guitar students.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 7 and as old as 65. I have worked with several children with learning difficulties with good success.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had to learn a song for a student. He wanted to learn a punk rock song from the seventies. It was a trial but we made it!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Hire an older teacher.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I have time to practice at least 3 times per week?
How long will it take for me to learn a song?
Will I be able to make most of my lessons?
Does my instrument fit me?
