How did you get started teaching?
At the age of 16 I began privately teaching guitar in my hometown of Cambridge in the UK. I continued this commitment throughout my time at college and whilst at ACM studying music. After graduating and accepting my position as a lecturer I also began touring but continued to teach privately via Skype and through my YouTube channel and tuition website.
What types of students have you worked with?
Having taught students from ages 6 - 60 privately and at renowned music universities, I am aware that everyone learns differently. I have a strong understanding that it is far easier to get the results you want when learning if you particularly enjoy doing so. Therefore I believe I must be positive encouraging at all times. I like to demonstrate skills first to get students excited about learning. I have often found this to be a very effective way. Despite now being 26 years old, I feel I can relate to younger students due to my experience teaching since the age of 16. Due to my professional, attitude and work experience, I can relate adults 100%.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Personally I believe it is a teacher's role to bring the best out of their students and discover what the students wants.
However, I do have some small advice to help kickstart the process.
- Have an idea of what music or songs you like
- Have an idea of which instrument you'd like to learn on
- Make it clear whether or not you want to learn grades/learn for fun or have a specific requirement to meet
