Kevin is a great instructor. He’s always encouraging and explains everything very clearly, even if the lessons are remote. He also told many stories about the history of the songs I was learning which were always interesting. You can tell that Kevin is passionate about what he teaches and it reflects in his lessons.

He didnt assume that I knew music theory, so we started learning the basics. Hes very knowledgeable about guitar and he can explain things well.

Kevin in an excellent instructor, who will help you really master the concepts of whatever you’re working on. From music theory to hand placement and playing techniques, Kevin really is a professional with a great teaching style. Even when I made the same mistakes over and over again, he was incredibly patient and made sure that I really understood what we were doing before moving on. I would highly recommend him and his lessons to anyone looking to learn guitar bass or ukulele!

Kevy Nova has been working with my 12 year old son for about 6 months on weekly guitar lessons. He has made tremendous improvement, but even more importantly Kevin has helped him foster a love of his own taste in music and what it takes to create it. They move at his pace and learn things that he is interested in. Its a very individually tailored experience that we really appreciate.

    Frequently asked questions

Every one of my students is unique so I like to tailor our lessons to suit their own goals, tastes, abilities and personality. I start by learning who their favorite artists are and why they want to learn to play. Once I get to know these things about them, I start teaching them what they need to know in order to reach their goals as quickly as possible. I don't use text books for this very reason. I want to help guide each student on their own personal musical journey.

Most of my musical education comes from a lifetime of experience. I was raised in a musical family and was given musical toys by my parents since I was a baby. Before I started school, I began picking out TV show themes on my toy instruments. I started violin classes at age 7 and guitar lessons at 9. I began performing professionally at the age of 16. Most of my teen years were spent learning songs from my parents '60s & '70s record collection but then I got into '80s and '90s music on my own. I then went back to the music of the '50s, '40s, '30s and so on, studying early Rock & Roll, Blues, Country, Pop, Classical, Reggae, and more. I've played professionally in Rock, Blues, Country and Alternative bands.

I have taught all ages and many different styles. My students have been anywhere from 5 to 70 years old! In addition to private lessons, I've been a music teacher at four different schools and one summer camp and also used to teach ukulele classes through the city Parks & Rec department before moving. I also taught an after-school musical theater program for 12 years.

I have recently reconnected through facebook with many of my former students who are now adults and working in the music/entertainment business. Some have become stage performers, others have become recording artists but it is wonderful for me to see that they are still making music all these years later. I remember starting with some of them when they were as young as 5 years old and now they are in their 20s and living the dream!

My advice would be to find a teacher who is flexible and interested in learning as much about the student as the student is interested in learning about the instrument. Music is a very personal thing so find a teacher who can teach you the styles that you love, and not necessarily the styles that the teacher loves.
